Wai, lei ho!

Yeeeeah, it’s time to slowly turn up the Canto dial on this thing! Mei Wu is going to get progressively more Cantonese as the book, and books continue. Brace thyself 😛

I love being mixed-race. Even more, I love being mixed-culture. Okay, I grew up in Scotland for most of my life, but my Mum and the Chinese half of my family always made sure I kept in touch with my Chinese heritage.

This absolutely does not mean that I condone the culinary travesty that is Haggis Won Ton

*shudder* For me, being multicultural isn’t about meshing things together artificially, nor is it about keeping two spheres separate from each other. It’s just about… Living, really. Identifying with all your parts. It doesn’t necessarily mean flaunting it (although that mostly stems from the twin personally conservative cultures of being Cantonese and Scottish. It’s a wonder I have enough confidence to carry on doing this comic!) Anyone who tells you that you need to pick a culture and stick with it is a moron. And probably a bigot. But mostly a moron. read more

Posts of no real consequence!

Last week’s post was somewhat heavy, so I thought I’d intersperse it with something nice and light. And what’s lighter than…. Nothing?

If there’s one thing working my job is that it’s incredibly important to just wind down, and do absolutely nothing from time to time. So, let’s kick back and do not very much for a bit!

Iced coffee is nice. Not many people are keen on it, but I love it. I’m not talking about frappuccinos, I’m talking properly brewed coffee, chilled, nice and milky, cubes of ice. It makes for a fantastic summer drink. Why am I drinking it during Autumn? Trying to claw back some of the summer, I suppose! read more

Mei Wu is here!

Hooray, the brand-spanking new work is here!

As a little bit of a break from Elf Blood, and in a bid to get some print work done, I’ve embarked on a little diversion here. Mei Wu is my loveletter to Chinese mythology, and centres around a society of fox spirits. The world of Mei Wu was two years in the making, based on discussions I’ve had with my aunt and my uncle, books I’ve read, and general making-stuff-up based on tradition, legend and other folklore!

Incidentally, the title is a pun (which I hope works as well as I think it does); nine-tailed fox spirits are known in Cantonese as Gau Mei Wu. However, I have replaced the word Mei (tail) for the word Mei (beautiful), which is also quite fitting as fox spirits took on the form of beautiful young women, and were often seductresses. read more
