Allow me to elaborate a little on the history of this page. Originally, Fliss and Carlita were supposed to be depicted in this scene as having sex, and Shanna was to interrupt this. Now, don’t get me wrong; I’m not squeamish, and I really don’t have a problem depicting my characters in that kind of setting. But as I thought about it, I realised that while I COULD have illustrated that scene, all in all there was no real purpose to it. Who, really, would I be doing that for? For myself? As fanservice? Did it even provide any form of development or was it simple, base titillation?

As part of my ongoing attempts to improve my writing and general creative ability, I went to my first session of a local writers’ group this week. Well, self-improvement and the fact that it’s very easy to get a little stir-crazy being cooped up in the flat at all hours outside of work. It’s great to be involved with a group of other creative people again, since the Comics Collective’s drink and draw dissolved.
I don’t mind admitting I felt a touch out of place, seeing as the others reading their work out that night had material that explored history, the depths of human relationships, the life of Shakespeare. What’d I bring? A graphic novel script-in-progress about mages. Fighting a fae automaton. While posing as social healthcare workers.
Aloha everybody! We’re nearing the end of the Dreamland Story Arc, so I thought I’d give you a little update on the upcoming story arc: Crush Depth!
Unfortunately I’ve not yet finished the actual script for the story, owing to having to deal with work work through lunchtimes when I’d normally be scripting. The detailed plot has been done for a while, though, and I’m about halfway complete on the script itself, so if I dedicate some time to working on it I’ll be able to get it done and reviewed before I start illustrating it!
Well, I’m back! That was a good introductory trip for business, and it was also a pretty good trip for inspiration! The city I was based in is a real engineering design and manfacturing powerhouse, with multiple sites composed of many, MANY buildings. It was somewhat impressively intimidating, towers of industry imposing order on the landscape. It was also quite eerie, the faceless fascias of the offices and factories numbered and lettered in logical order calling to mind notions of some hidden laboratory complex, humming with secrets behind every wall.
I HAD prepared a gripe about people and their inability to write appropriate and meaningful briefs for graphic design, but then I noticed; This is the 300th page of Elf Blood! How awesome is that?
Again, thanks for reading the comic. It’s great to see people reading, commenting and engaging with the story, as truly the best reward for me is knowing that I’m entertaining you guys!
So, what’ve I got planned for the comic? Well, here’s a bit of a list of some big things, and some smaller but still interesting things!
One thing I’ve noticed recently, as I’ve picked up working on my novel again, is the relative difficulty I seem to have in writing normal prose and writing a comic script.
Theoretically, they’re very similar. You need to work out the plot, how the characters fit into and affect that, and how the characters relate to and interact with each other. You need to fit the whole thing into a timeline, and you need to distribute that timeline across the entirety of the story so as to ensure that the reader feels neither rushed nor held back.
Ello there, all! Today’s page is just a little Extra, in-between arc blocks, and is a little celebration of the fact that Elf Blood is just a little over 3 years old now! I’d also like to point out that I’m eating noodles, not Millie’s hairm which I have just noticed it might look like.
Anyways, I’ve been brainstorming some ideas for a script submission. Stop me if any of this sounds familiar:
Some people are born with magical ability. These people are identified in their infancy through monitoring systems in place with psychologists and social workers. These children are kidnapped and raised alongside each other in a government institution. There, they learn to control their powers, and are bound to serve the government upon graduation. They serve alongside the others that they have grown up with, and each team is a surrogate family unit.
Aloha everybody, I’m afraid today is another quick update as again I have worked far too late on a night before work. On the plus side, I got another page of my graphic novel Lemon Candies finished, so it’s not all bad! It’s all go here at Manson Towers, with my project load increasing both in and out of regular work. Best kept busy, eh?
Fear not, I’m sure regular wordy updates will resume shortly, as I get stricter about my schedule. I’m sure I had an essay on nerdiness tucked away, somewhere… Anyhoo, enjoy today’s page and I’ll see you Friday for an Elf Blood Extra!
Hello all, just a quick update today as, again, it’s quite late as I’ve not been sleeping so well this week and so haven’t been sticking to schedules as well I can. The good news is that my disrupted sleeping pattern isn’t the result of negative thoughts; It’s excitement and apprehension. Hopefully more on that later, but for now, enjoy today’s Elf Blood! Still can’t believe it’s been three years. Still can’t believe I thought I was a good artist when I started 😛
Guess what! Elf Blood is THREE YEARS OLD this week! How awesome is that? It’s not been an easy journey, and there’s been a hell of a lot of learning along the way, but damn if it hasn’t been fun!
I never thought, when I started, that I’d still be as passionate about the comic as I was at the beginning, that I would’ve improved so much as a writer and an artist, and that I would be entertaining hundreds, thousands of people from all around the world. Elf Blood isn’t just a comic to me: It’s allowed me to prove that I can do comics, and inspired me with the confidence and discipline to create print comics, currently standing at one published and one graphic novel halfway-done.
