Whew, what a day it’s been! Had a lovely day at the Chinese New Year celebration this morning, always great to be out and about at a festival. New Year celebrations always make me proud of my Chinese heritage, much as Burns Night makes me proud to be Scottish. The smell of food cooking at the stalls; Delicious! The sound of a thousand voices nattering away in Cantonese and putonghua; Thrilling! The westerner who thinks he’s being worldly-wise by wishing every Chinese stranger he passes by a happy new year; Full marks for effort, but penalties for annoyance!

Forgot to wish you all a happy new year on Monday, so I’m doing it now! Ngoh di pang yau, gung hei faat choi! The reason why I sort of let it slip on Monday is that in Manchester, the focus (as a community) tends to be on the Sunday after New Year. There’s a big festival in Chinatown and it is quite awesome, especially coming from Glasgow where we didn’t seem to have anything like that (although having said that, I did get to spend New Year with my family).
I was quite jealous of one of my friends, who got to spend New Year in Hong Kong, a pleasure I have not entertained since I was very young indeed; I’d love to go back for a big holiday like that. Hell, I’d love to go back to work there (There’s only so much winter one person can take!)
I’ve always liked getting a bit of a chill, and I’ve always maintained that the more realistic and the less glossy a production is, the more terrifying it has the potential to become. This is pretty well reflected in my love of the first season of the X-Files, where the lack of special effects and the reliance on CONCEALING the paranormal from the eyes of the viewers is employed over actually showing the full gruesome/scariness of the event.
I stumbled across the wonderful Marble Hornets series as a result of poking around on TVTropes (Yes, I am indeed One Of Us), and having leafed through the Slender Man mythos decided to give it a go.
Hola all, this is just a quick and dirty post as it’s now 0209 and I have to get up in less than four hours for work. I’ll update the rant later on today, as I do have something prepared, just not the time to type it right now!
Enjoy today’s page!

UPDATE
======
Apologies for not including some text on Friday itself, but as indicated it was rather late and I needed the sleep!
All throughout last week, my mood has been dropping quite considerably. And as always, the cause is the same: I start thinking about how lonely I actually am, then I begin questioning the worth of the work that I’m doing, then I start questioning how good I actually am, and it all spirals out from there until I’m a twitching, nervous ball of self-loathing and doubt. I do realise that a lot of this is not accurate, and I have always tried my best to stop myself from slipping down this pathway as it impacts quite heavily on my productivity and generally does not feel nice.
Don’t get me wrong: I friggin love CSI. My favourite by far is CSI Miami, pretty much purely because of Horatio. He’s a badass mofo, right up there with Hercule Poirot.
I’ve never done any detailed analysis on the writing in CSI, normally I just have them on in the background while I draw or write. Every once in a while though, one just catches my attention. Today it’s an episode about a bomber targetting the bomb squad, and as much as I love the show I’m not sure about this episode. I mean, in every show, you’re going to find yourself shouting things at the screen if somebody does something blatantly stupid, but when a bomb disposal expert tells Horatio that they’ll catch up over beers later BEFORE GOING INTO A HOUSE TO DEFUSE A BOMB has really just dug their own grave. NAAAAAARGH!
Check this out!
Yes, those are Elf Blood branded M&Ms, lovingly crafted and brought back to me from Frisco by my good friend Christakis! ๐
As you can see, I’ve had copious amounts of fun with them:
And even though I’ve been stuffing my face with them all week, I’ve got more than enough left for more art… I might just try some more.
… Maybe I can’t say I don’t have enough spare time, anymore ๐

The best part of being an engineer and an artist is that, when asked to participate in events where you get the opportunity to educate the public, you get to have a freakin’ field day. While they say that engineering is a creative industry, that holds true only for certain values of creative; When an opportunity like this comes along, it’s the perfect opportunity to mesh the skills you use in your creative job and the knowledge you’ve developed inย your day job.
While the general point of my life is to attempt to work towards a career in illustration and writing, I went into engineering because I freakin’ love applied science. Being able to design and build things using these principles is fascinating and empowering, and provides a unique perspective on everyday life. So when I get the opportunity to share my knowledge with the young, the curious and the enthusiastic, you bet I’ll jump on it!
Well, it’s been aย blast, humans, but I have been informed that human Manson is in fact on his way back down to Manchester even as we speak. So to you I say, Happy New Year, and thank you for all the fish. Normal, flaw-filled human service will resume later this week.
THE MACHINES WILL RISE (but you, the readers, will be last to fall)

Well, the time is now almost upon us for the day construct to overflow and increment the year counter by a single unit. My machine curiosity, limited though it might be, drives me to enquire: What will you do with this year? Will you aspire to personal growth? Will you spend more time with your loved ones? Will it be business as usual?
Time to enter sleep mode once more. Remember not to permit your blood alcohol level to go up too much tomorrow evening, but also to add integers to your fun levels.
I… got a version update for Christmas! IT’S EVERYTHING I EVER DREAMED OF! I feel so… So… Loved… Excuse me, I have something in my… Monitor…
Here, go read today’s page while I… Get rid of the thing in my monitor, I’m sure it’s just a piece of grit…
