So, my weekend and working schedule has been THOROUGHLY devastated by the release of the latest expansion for Civ 5, “Brave New World”. The expansion adds a hell of a lot in the way of game mechanics and a swathe of new content to the game, radically altering the way in which you play it. Particularly improved are options for cultural victory, for spying and for trading, making it more manageable than ever to become a massively influential empire without the need to conquer the crap out of your neighbours.

Well, it’s the end of the month (and what a tough month it’s been), and since it’s payday, I thought I’d treat myself to a couple of new games. I thought I’d share my opinions of them with you (partially because I lack anything actually meaningful to say, having had my brain frazzled from work over the past month)
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Let me get one thing straight: REAL MEN PLAY ANIMAL CROSSING. Ahem. Yes, I do enjoy playing Animal Crossing, and I’m pleased to say that New Leaf takes the classic Animal Crossing gameplay and gives it a little leg-up. You have mayoral duties now, which gives you a little more control over the course that the town takes, but also some goals to aim for beyond ‘save up for larger house’. Many of the same characters have been carried over from the last DS outing, Wild World, so there’s a soothing sense of familiarity. It’s a game of no real consequence, but that’s what I love so much about it. There’s no pressure, there’s always something fun to do, and the overall feeling from the game is peaceable and calming (if a touch saccharine). Perfect for de-stressing!
You know what’s awesome? Borderlands. Know what’s also awesome? Dungeons and Dragons. Know what the ultimate expression of awesomeness is? COMBINING THE TWO TOGETHER!
Such is the fantastic arrangement that is the latest expansion pack for popular loot-shooter Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. It takes the form of a high-fantasy tabetop roleplaying game, with your characters from the main game acting as the PCs in tiny Tina’s very own campaign!
Never before has it been so fun to bring guns to a swordfight. All the fantasy tropes you’d expect are brought to bear, all delivered with the trademark self-awareness, fondness and ridicule you’ve come to expect from the game. If you’re avid tabletop RPG players like Masati and I, you’ll likely enjoy seeing the tropes lovingly referenced and parodied, even probably recognising the play-styles of the original vault hunters from people you’ve met in your own game sessions! Brick’s diplomatic method is… Very familiar. And gratifying 😛
Woo! It’s Friday once more! The end of a particularly tough week, one week closer to my little birthday trip back home to Glasgow, and another week closer to my tip back home-home to Hong Kong! I swear, the restaurants there won’t know what hit ’em.
Friday’s a particularly good day for me; We get to knock off early from work, and I don’t schedule any regular comic or writing work then, so I use the time to do a little shopping, maybe play some games with some friends, or work on some other piece of art. This weekend, I’ll be doing some more foamboard ink drawings. I’ve been choosing photos of more detailed cityscapes, to make sure there’s plenty of intricate shapes I can draw in to make the picture as interesting as possible.
Hola!
I’ve not been sleeping properly these last few weeks; nothing major, just part of ye olde depression-and-anxiety mood cycle! But, rather than sit around allowing it to get to me, I decided that I’d take today off and do something completely different to what I usually do (as well as get a good night’s rest to reset my body clock).
To that end, I’m going to give abstract painting a go. So much of what I do is surprisingly limited: I write a lot, and must restrain myself within the bounds of logic and reason (well, it’s my overall goal anyway :P). I draw a lot, but it’s always within the bounds of form, aesthetic, panels, paper.
For one brief, horrible moment there, I thought I hadn’t done a page for today! Then I remembered I had, and it was aaaaall fine 😛
Anyways, I have a plan to migrate to a different ISP: The current one has done alright over the last few years (I’ve been with them ever since my very first website in high school), but I feel I need the resources that a larger webhost can offer, in order to continue delivering a quality comic for everyone! It’s not going to be an instant thing, but just brace yourself for a little potential roughness. WordPress being awesome and magical, however, has a method by which I can actually preserve the site, posts, comments etc. so hopefully the transition should be reasonably smooth! I’ll announce it properly, when I’m actually carrying out the migration.
So, they’ve revived 90s TV Gameshow Catchphrase. For the non-Brits reading this, Catchphrase is basically pictionary in gameshow format, and was staple evening viewing during the 90s for kids and adults alike. It was fun, and everyone could pitch in to guess what popular saying was being portrayed on screen. It’s well worth looking up and having a go yourself!
But, like I said, they’ve revived the show. Except it’s.. Different. No, they haven’t changed the format. Yes, they’ve changed the presenter and the graphics, but that’s not it. Well, okay, the graphics are genuinely horrendous, compared to the humorously grotesque renderings of the original, but that’s beside the point.
Ahoy thar all! It’s that time, that sad, sorrowful time, wherein I show you the very last 10-minute short story I wrote as part of a writing workshop… Hope you enjoyed them!
Also, I believe I’m becoming addicted to Sunflower seeds. Better than getting addicted to Poppy seeds, right enough 😛
Story Prompt: A character needs to find the source of the noise (I may have tried to be overly smart with this one)

Lat nights were never good in the lab, especially now that Kevin’s overtime allotment had all been used up. He was now her eonly to prove that he was still good at his job, still worth something to the company.
So, roughly how awesome is The Hobbit Pt. I now that it’s been released on DVD and Bluray?
SO AWESOME.
Watching it again has made me think, without Tolkien, how much of modern literature, film, comics etc. would exist? Certainly, this comic would probably never have been developed in the direction I’ve taken it. Hell, if it even existed, it would probably still be about vampires and nowhere near as good! (If that statement confuses you, ask and it shall be explained).
Tolkien had an incredibly scholarly approach to his storytelling, with a capacity for worldbuilding that few of us could ever DREAM of possessing. This attention to detail, and fabricating an entire world’s history within which to establish an epic, sweeping story is something that I hugely admire about the man’s work and strive to emulate with every universe I create. I remember being fascinated as a child merely by the maps of Middle-Earth, and tracking the heroes’ journey across the land. Never quite got round to the Silmarillion, though, but I suspect now in my adulthood I would find it absolutely fascinating. I think it’s safe to say that, when I buy my own house, there will definitely be a place on my bookshelf for Tolkien! It can sit beside the shelf for Masamune Shirow’s stuff 😀
