So, I watched a documentary called ‘Confessions of an Alien Abductee’ earlier. Now, I’ve watched a good number of UFO documentaries in my time, having enjoyed UFO stories since I was a kid. Never before have I seen a documentary as insensitive, exploitative, and just generally disgusting as this one.

First off, let me clarify my position on UFOs and aliens. I very much want to believe; however, I demand scientific rigour and a strong position of evidence in order to be convinced that something has happened. This program did not supply either of these. Instead, what we got were several people obviously undergoing a schizophrenic episode or psychotic break. Now, I have a tremendous amount of sympathy for these people, especially the man who seems to have created his abduction experience as a coping fantasy to survive a broken home. What I really, truly disliked about this show was the insensitive manner in which the interviewer dealt with the people, essentially being VERY passive-aggressive and baiting them to say the stupidest things possible. I’m sure there are other abductees out there who are possessed not just of good mental faculties, but also the self-awareness to talk about their experience in a frank and sensible manner.

The group set up to ‘help’ the abductees was a shambles as well. Their staff have no scientific method, and appear to be doing simply ‘what feels right’. I was going to say that they fed relentlessly into the victims’ delusions, were it not for the fact that they themselves are clearly suffering from paranoia and delusions of grandeur.

It was a sad documentary, not just to see how damaged some people are, but also for the fact that Channel 4 had apparently decided to showcase undiagnosed mental disability in the most embarassing way possible. Poor show, I say. Poor show!

Anyway, rant over! I’ll see you all again on Monday!

P.S. The ultimate UFO documentary is still Danny Dyer: I believe in UFOs. Just for the sheer brilliance of Danny Dyer talking to Sir Patrick Moore. Watching an abject meathead try, TRY to discuss things with a genius is both painful AND entertaining!
