Weekend, woo!

Woo! It’s Friday once more! The end of a particularly tough week, one week closer to my little birthday trip back home to Glasgow, and another week closer to my tip back home-home to Hong Kong! I swear, the restaurants there won’t know what hit ’em.

Friday’s a particularly good day for me; We get to knock off early from work, and I don’t schedule any regular comic or writing work then, so I use the time to do a little shopping, maybe play some games with some friends, or work on some other piece of art. This weekend, I’ll be doing some more foamboard ink drawings. I’ve been choosing photos of more detailed cityscapes, to make sure there’s plenty of intricate shapes I can draw in to make the picture as interesting as possible. read more

Teacher Celebration Post!

Trash TV

So, I watched a documentary called ‘Confessions of an Alien Abductee’ earlier. Now, I’ve watched a good number of UFO documentaries in my time, having enjoyed UFO stories since I was a kid. Never before have I seen a documentary as insensitive, exploitative, and just generally disgusting as this one.

First off, let me clarify my position on UFOs and aliens. I very much want to believe; however, I demand scientific rigour and a strong position of evidence in order to be convinced that something has happened. This program did not supply either of these. Instead, what we got were several people obviously undergoing a schizophrenic episode or psychotic break. Now, I have a tremendous amount of sympathy for these people, especially the man who seems to have created his abduction experience as a coping fantasy to survive a broken home. What I really, truly disliked about this show was the insensitive manner in which the interviewer dealt with the people, essentially being VERY passive-aggressive and baiting them to say the stupidest things possible. I’m sure there are other abductees out there who are possessed not just of good mental faculties, but also the self-awareness to talk about their experience in a frank and sensible manner. read more

New medium, new art!

Hullo everyone!

It’s a bit late, so I’ll only put up a little post today (I’ve been reformatting a script for submission; that and giving myself the fear about trying to break into the industry), and I promised you an experimental piece last week, so here are the results!

This is white gel pen on black foamboard. There’s also some red and purple gel pen, but they didn’t show up at all on the black background so I tried to hue the white ink with them; It didn’t turn out so great. read more

A post of no real consequence

Hola amigos!

I do try and make these posts as informative or thought-provoking as possible (when they don’t just spiral into rants about whatever I’m currently annoyed at), but this time round I thought I’d just muse on stuff that has entertained me this week!

I think I’ve discovered a new medium that I desperately want to explore. Black foamboard, meet white gel pen and acrylic pen. IT IS SO SATISFYING TO DRAW ON. With the gel pen, you can get some really nice sketch effects, while the acrylic pen gives a mighty, well-defined and bold stroke useful for doing thick outlining. Plus, the starkness of the white on the black background really helps what you’ve drawn stand out; because people are so used to black on white for sketches, it really draws attention when you invert that. read more

Congratulations due!

Hullo all, just a quick update today, but I’d like to take a minute to say congratulations to my friend and colleague Marko on the birth of his baby! It seems like just yesterday we were students on a scholarship, and now you’re a family man! You’re gonna make a great father, and if inheritance is anything to go by, the little one’s going to turn out smart, friendly, and roguishly handsome 😛

Feminism?

Now, I’ve never outwardly identified myself as a feminist (mostly because, to be honest, I don’t fully understand the feminist/masculinist movements). What I’ve always done is to simply write characters and roles, and allow the physical aspects of the character develop later on.

As you can clearly see, I lean towards having more female characters than male; indeed, I feel that some of my male characters are actually quite flat and are in dire need of development (JN, I’m looking at you!) As a result, my female characters tend to have very varied personalities, goals and interests. read more

Y’know what? I do feel better.

I’ve had the server up for just under a week, now, and y’know what? I’m glad I moved hosts. It’s faster, it gives me more for my money, it gives me more control over the site, and it no longer goes down for an hour every day.

It’s not just beneficial for you guys reading the comic; It’s a massive burden off my shoulders as well. Because I no longer worry about the actual functions of the site, I can focus my efforts on writing the next storyline, on drawing the next page, on finishing the other work I’ve got going on. It’s amazing how much more positive I feel about creating and creativity; to be honest, before I pushed myself to migrate the site I was having a serious think about what I was doing with my life. Was it really worth chasing a creative dream when I could invest that time in, say, climbing the career ladder, finding a partner, raising a family? read more

Let’s try something different!

Hola!

I’ve not been sleeping properly these last few weeks; nothing major, just part of ye olde depression-and-anxiety mood cycle! But, rather than sit around allowing it to get to me, I decided that I’d take today off and do something completely different to what I usually do (as well as get a good night’s rest to reset my body clock).

To that end, I’m going to give abstract painting a go. So much of what I do is surprisingly limited: I write a lot, and must restrain myself within the bounds of logic and reason (well, it’s my overall goal anyway :P). I draw a lot, but it’s always within the bounds of form, aesthetic, panels, paper. read more
