Niche, or limitation?

Ello there, all! Today’s page is just a little Extra, in-between arc blocks, and is a little celebration of the fact that Elf Blood is just a little over 3 years old now! I’d also like to point out that I’m eating noodles, not Millie’s hairm which I have just noticed it might look like.

Anyways, I’ve been brainstorming some ideas for a script submission. Stop me if any of this sounds familiar:

Some people are born with magical ability. These people are identified in their infancy through monitoring systems in place with psychologists and social workers. These children are kidnapped and raised alongside each other in a government institution. There, they learn to control their powers, and are bound to serve the government upon graduation. They serve alongside the others that they have grown up with, and each team is a surrogate family unit. read more

Don’t worry, Be Happy

Hello all, just a brief blog-thing update today as I’m very very tired while I prepost this, having been delayed by an anxiety attack. I’m fine now, but I should probably go to bed and get some rest. I find I feel better when I’ve had a good night’s sleep.

Anyway, I’d like to say thanks to all of you for really taking an interest in Monday’s storyline and having a civilised discussion about the topics it addresses without it devolving into a flamewar. Not that I thought that would happen, certainly not here: I like to think Elf Blood readers are a cut above, and thus far your behaviour shines! read more

Seriousness, and the difficulty thereof

This page was actually quite difficult to do: Not so much because of the content, but because I had to scrutinize every single detail of the art to make sure I was giving the moment the right amount of gravity. One off-model character, one goofy expression, one inappropriate sound effect, and the scene transforms from a traumatic explosion of aggression to a narm-tastic trivialisation of a threat faced by far too many.

It was particularly difficult to get the characters’ expressions right. the most-straightforward was probably Shanna in panel 6, mostly because her face is mostly covered by her hand and her eye just needed to be wide-open in shock. Fliss’ expression in panel 5 was by and far the most difficult one I’ve ever had to compose. The face is a hugely versatile and complex social tool, and even the subtlest modification in the positioning of any of those features can completely change the emotion that we’re representing. In this panel, I wanted to show not just shock, but also physical pain, sadness, fear and betrayal. I can’t tell you how many revisions I made to the pencils on that panel, because nothing I was drawing seemed to do the trick. Eventually, I had to give up and move on to complete the rest of the page before coming back to it and experimenting more until I finally found the combination I felt conveyed how Fliss felt following this unprovoked assault. read more

Recipe Time!

Ahoy thar all, as it’s now pushing 2AM as I pre-post this page,  instead of trying to philosophize or get riled up about something, I’m going to share one of my recipes with you! If you try it, let me know how it goes 😀 It’s one of my favourites.

Chorizo Stew

Ingredients:
1x Ring Chorizo
1x Can Chopped Tomatoes
1 Can Butterbeans
1x Large White Onion
1/2 Halloumi Cheese
1/2 doz Chestnut Mushrooms
1x Beef Stock Cube (Or equivalent stock: 500ml worth)
1x small green chilli
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tbsp dried basil
Salt & Pepper for seasoning read more

Neurosis and the mind

One thing that I’ve noticed and have been noticing recently is that, frequently, intelligence and/or creative talent may be accompanied by neurosis. This is by no means an exhaustive, statistically ratified study: More from observation of myself, my friends and my family.

Often, said observed person will suffer from near-constant self-doubt and lowered self-esteem, despite the intense effort and good quality of work they produce. It’s arguable that this inability to recognise one’s own success (not quite perfectionism, but often mistaken for such) is what drives such people towards making improvements in their skills and abilities. Unfortunately, as useful as this sounds it does mean that no matter how much success you have you can never really take joy in it. It’s a horrible state of affairs to be in, and no amount of conscious, rational thought can ever really override the internal feeling of self-hatred and fill that gaping hole of confidence. read more

Blasts from the Past!

Well, as Kracka requested and as I promised, I had a root around my hard drive and found some stuff from days of yore, before I started doing Elf Blood. I’ve spared you some absolute horrors, but what I did wasn’t exactly brilliant before getting in the practice from doing Elf Blood. So, y’know, go easy on it 😛

You honestly thought that Flesh Manson could write such eloquent blog posts? No, it was all my work! MY WORK!

Truly a victory for scheduling bots everywhere. Oh, you want to know where Flesh Manson was? He’s been at some form of human social event over the last week. You know, SELECT * FROM person1 UNION SELECT * FROM person2. I think he called it a ‘weeding’. I don’t understand, what does the joining of two human units into a singular familial unit have to do with errant plant growth? read more

Developing Characters

Now, I’m sure many of you are wondering what direction I’m going to take this in, or even what the hell I’m doing putting this storyline in, in the middle of SKO’s quest to avenge the murders of Charlie-3.

The B-Story is not only a method by which we can extend primary plots (although Dreamland needed very little stretching if I’m honest), it gives us breathers, refreshes our interest in the story as a whole, and more importantly, lets us explore the lives and personalities of characters tangential or unrelated to the main story. The Benefits of Rest

Although I’ve been really busy during the last week, I’ve found that I’m actually getting more rest, ironically because I’m getting LESS sleep during the evenings. The result is that I’m actually tired enough to take a nap on the bus home from work which, thanks to the schools being back and peoples’ schedules reverting to normal, can take up to an hour. So I actually get a good proper chance to catch some sleep which actually makes me feel a lot better later on in the day. And if I get a decent amount of rest, I find that I’m less worried about life in general, I’m not as depressed about love or art or money, and I’m far more productive in the evenings. read more

The Cycle

I suppose it is, by now, a cliché to say that everything must end to allow the new to take root. But finally finishing off something, whether it’s a book, a game, or something that you’re working on is always so exciting. It means you’ve accomplished something, that you’ve borne it out to the end and maintained the effort required to do so.

Then there’s the excitement of what you’re going to work on next. Maybe you’ll choose a different book, or you’ll revisit a game that you’ve neglected for a long time. In my case, I get a couple of pages’ breather where I get to try something completely new, followed by a brand spanking new story arc that I’m really pleased with (having actually written the script beforehand, instead of just plot outline). On Friday, I’ll be telling a story as the Accountant, and the Monday after that I’ll be experimenting with new photoshop techniques to produce a ‘cover’ for the new arc, ‘Dreamland’. It’s not so much a break in that I’ll be doing less work: It’s a break in the routine, a chance for me to do something completely different. That’s what I find most exciting: Variety. read more
