Now, as many of you know, I’m not originally from Manchester, or even Glasgow. No, I hail from the far-off magical land known as Hong Kong. While I was born there to one British parent and while it was still a colony, I still consider myself (and have had to deal with many of the issues pertaining to being) an immigrant, having moved when I was about five or so. Okay, I’ll happily admit that much of it has worn off, having lived in the UK for a good number of years. But I still get bloody angry when I hear people complain about immigration.

I’ve got a creative fire in my belly this week. Not entirely sure why, but I reckon it’s to do with the excitement of working on the new story arc! I’ve been inspired to crack on with it, I’ve been driven to write more of my script for submission, I’ve had the impetus to write more of my novel, and I’ve even had the chance to draw a bit more of Memecasters Book 2. I still wish I had more time to write and to draw, but right now, with the day getting longer and the post-Christmas malaise finally dying down, I’m finding it easier to get into my creative work again. I’ve not yet recaptured the energy I had, say, two years ago, but that’s probably down to me still not getting enough quality sleep and messing up my weekends. Still, it’s getting easier, and I’ve got a lot of my passion back, so it’s all good eh?
Ah, the satisfaction of closing out a story arc! I think this one has been a fairly decent one, and there’s definitely a benefit to writing the whole script out in advance of illustrating the comic. There’s always things to improve on, though! Hope you’ve enjoyed this arc, and are looking forward to the next one!
Anyways, on Saturday night I went with a couple of friends to (FINALLY) go see Wreck-It-Ralph, Pixar’s (or Disney’s, whatever it is they’re actually called now) newest film. All I have to say is; GO SEE IT! GO SEE IT NOW!
Now, I’ve written about food before, and I’m sure that in my previous writing on the subject I’ve probably given the (very accurate) impression that I friggin love making and consuming tasty food. I’m fortunate enough to be blessed with friends and family who are of the same opinion and motive.
Last weekend, I made a little trip back up to Glasgow, and stopped in to cook dinner with a couple of friends as an alternative to a night out. One friend took it upon himself to make a timelapse video of us making the food, which turned out pretty awesomely and I might link to if the others give their permission to do so. While the camera was positioned fairly far away, we discussed it and came to the conclusion that it would be quite good to produce more timelapses of us preparing more meals.
As part of my ongoing attempts to improve my writing and general creative ability, I went to my first session of a local writers’ group this week. Well, self-improvement and the fact that it’s very easy to get a little stir-crazy being cooped up in the flat at all hours outside of work. It’s great to be involved with a group of other creative people again, since the Comics Collective’s drink and draw dissolved.
I don’t mind admitting I felt a touch out of place, seeing as the others reading their work out that night had material that explored history, the depths of human relationships, the life of Shakespeare. What’d I bring? A graphic novel script-in-progress about mages. Fighting a fae automaton. While posing as social healthcare workers.
Aloha everybody! We’re nearing the end of the Dreamland Story Arc, so I thought I’d give you a little update on the upcoming story arc: Crush Depth!
Unfortunately I’ve not yet finished the actual script for the story, owing to having to deal with work work through lunchtimes when I’d normally be scripting. The detailed plot has been done for a while, though, and I’m about halfway complete on the script itself, so if I dedicate some time to working on it I’ll be able to get it done and reviewed before I start illustrating it!
Like so many others, I used to actively resent Valentines Day. I thought today was going to be like all my other Valentines Days alone (i.e. all of them), but something occurred to me; what good does it do? All bitterness does is bring you down and bring everyone around you down; If you can’t be happy, then at least try and make others or let them be happy. At least that way you leave the world at least as good a place as you found it.
Sure, Valentines Day is over-commercialised, and sure, people should be able to express affection at any other time of the year to each other. But there’s no harm in making a little extra effort on one day, is there? If somebody wants to use Valentine’s Day to give them an excuse to make their lover extra happy, more power to them. If somebody only declares their love for their partner on Valentine’s Day, it’s no business of mine and certainly not for me to ruin with bitterness and crankiness.
Gong hei faat choi everybody! A very happy and prosperous year of the snake to you all, and I hope your health is better than mine has been for the last few days! Back up on my feet now, but still a bit wobbly. Nothing that’ll keep me off work!
If you celebrate, hope you had a nice meal with your family and if you’re young enough/single enough, you got something good in your lai see!
Anyway, joi gin! Must hit the hay if I’m to crawl into the office tomorrow. I’ll answer the questions that were posed last week at some point during the day!
So, the new season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is almost here; For those of you not in the know, it’s a very, VERY dark TV series that explores the impact of technology on society through dramatic form. Going over the synopses for the first series, the future presented in this somehwat hellish universe is utterly terrifying. People under the thumb of ruling parties, corporations, their own greed and sadism; It’s not only a grim, bleak portrayal of the future, but serves to analyse the social dystopia we inhabit here and now.
Well, I’m back! That was a good introductory trip for business, and it was also a pretty good trip for inspiration! The city I was based in is a real engineering design and manfacturing powerhouse, with multiple sites composed of many, MANY buildings. It was somewhat impressively intimidating, towers of industry imposing order on the landscape. It was also quite eerie, the faceless fascias of the offices and factories numbered and lettered in logical order calling to mind notions of some hidden laboratory complex, humming with secrets behind every wall.
