Feminism and Comics

I’ve touched on this subject a couple of times before in these little ranty blog-posts, but I’d like to touch on it again as a number of my friends, who are feminists, have become more vocal about their opinions on feminism within comics.

I’m going to start out by, again, pointing out that I don’t identify as a feminist; I like the goals and offer my support, but I don’t feel I comprehend the full spectrum of arguments well enough to affirmatively say ‘yes, I am one of these’. I’d describe my own, personal stance as being more like ‘people are people, let’s all get on with each other and not be assholes’. It doesn’t quite address the inequalities experienced by many, but I think it’s a good starting point for life in general. read more

Training Day… No, not the film.

MaronaPossessed, that middle panel is for you. Everyone else, you may read and enjoy it, but it was done all special-like for MP, as a way of making up for that horrendous Shanna panel a few pages back! Hopefully this one’s a lot better 😛

Secret-Project-X is going quite well, and I should be able to reveal more details soon; I just need to inform a few more people of things first. In the meantime, I’m going to leave today’s post relatively short, as I have to disappear shortly; I’ll be travelling off-site to train people in the morning, so I really need to be up bright and early! read more

Artistic cross-pollination

ART SHIFT!

It’s a little crude, I’ll admit, but I’m quite pleased with the effect granted by illustrating the goddess figure in a completely different style. As you may already know, I’ve been doing a lot more acrylic painting recently, and I’ve been picking up a lot of good tips and tricks along the way. Key of which is to hold one’s nerve, and not to panic when things go wrong; if you make a mistake, it’s not the end of the world, you can always fix things by painting it out or letting it dry and painting over it. One video tutorial I looked at (and then abandoned because it was really more of an extended advert for the artist’s work) summarised the experience well,  saying that when painting using acrylics, all you’re really doing is pushing paint around the canvas. read more

It’s another… Post of no consequence!

Hullo thar, everyone!

I’ve been racking my brains for the last few minutes desperately trying to come up with a post to accompany today’s page but, sadly, nothing of any real consequence or import is forthcoming.

So I’m just gonna let this one go, informally, uncelebrated, as I sit here basking in the glow of my fan-heater (it’s still a bit chilly here). I’ve been preparing all day for something I’ve got to do tomorrow, and now I think I’ve earned the… I’m not sure if it even has a name. One part orange juice, two parts cloudy lemonade, a dash of grenadine syrup. It’s quite pleasant to drink and to look at. Kinda like  a non-alcoholic tequila sunrise. read more

Well, that went reasonably well!

Another week, another experience!

All this week, I’ve been trying to sell my paintings at work, to my ever-tolerant colleagues. I’d set it up as a blind auction, so that I could garner some information on how best to price my artwork. The conclusions I have come to are as follows:

  • It’s a lot more difficult to sell art than I initially anticipated!
  • Many people, while they may appreciate a painting and have kind things to say about it, may simply not be in a place where they want to purchase one.
  • When you have no cachet, as an artist just beginning the journey, your work is worth a lot less than what you might envision in terms of real money. That does NOT mean that your work is any less VALUABLE, but you’re not going to make all that much more than cost + time if you want to start building up your reputation and credibility.
  • You may have to be prepared to let a painting go for a little less than cost + time, if it’s going to generate more business or goodwill; ye olde loss leader. Just be sure that you’re not being taken advantage of, and I suspect that’ll be a completely separate lesson.

Having learned all of these, I have received two bids for two of my paintings, which is nice! I shan’t announce the details, as I believe to do so would not be proper, but I now have a baseline to gauge my pricing around; My 8×8 in pieces should go for an average of £50, so I now have real data to refine my pricing model. read more

Bleary-eyed again!

Due to a number of my projects colliding spectacularly, it’s now 1 AM again as I preload this comic! But y’know what, I don’t mind – This truly is what is meant by the phrase ‘suffer for your art’; If you’re not dedicating most of your runtime to your chosen artform(s), you’re either only doing it as a hobby, or you’ve got a hell of a lot more of a way to go than you think!

Aaaaaaanyways, I’d also like to congratulate my Aunt Karen, who completed the Greater Manchester Marathon this weekend in just under 5 hours. Well done on an amazing achievement! read more

Fighting the Power?

In the last week or so, a number of billboards have been cropping up in and around Manchester. Here, take a look for yourselves!

As it’s described on the billboards, this campaign is “a self analytical critique of consumer life”, directly posing such questions as “What lie will I wear today?”, and wielding statements like “We breathe shallower now.”

The campaign has been designed to provoke thought and conversation about the modern consumer experience, and to highlight the failings of contemporary consumer culture. A noble goal, to be sure, but (as I am in contrarian mode this week and being a grumpy bear) I have my problems with the campaign. read more

Creative realisations

As part of super-secret-project-x (which you might be figuring out by about now), I’ve been giving some thought as to what it is that I enjoy doing, both as a job and outside of work.

The key thing about my personality is that I am first and foremost a creative person. But what, exactly, does that mean? Well, so far as I figure it it means that I’m happiest when I’m directly producing something myself. That may be a picture, a painting, a document, a piece of code; as long as I am responsible for the making of said thing, I am very happy indeed. read more

Keeping up the work.

Even though work and secret-project-x (not nearly as exciting as it sounds, unfortunately) are keeping me incredibly busy, I’ve been able to start ramping my creative output up a bit more. While I’ve not quite reached the same levels I used to be able to, I’ve definitely been doing a lot more this week than I have in recent months! Let’s take a look;

Storywriting: I’ve been picking away at a short story, and tweaking my novel (again). Again, it’s not a massive amount of work, but I HAVE learned some good lessons about the conservation of detail, and pacing. One of the impacts that working mainly in a graphic novel format has had on my writing is that I have a tendency to do a lot of visual description and info-dumping up-front rather than allowing the physical universe of the story to evolve. read more
