Prejudice against the Prejudiced.

This rant will get mildly political, so those of you just here for the comics are excused from class early!

Now, I’m sure I’ve made mention of the British National Party in posts before the big database meltdown, but for those of you outside of the UK or who are otherwise unfamiliar with them, they are a far-right group that are gaining an alarming amount of legitimacy, mostly through disaffected areas in England.

The news story involving them this week comes as the London Mayoral elections loom over us. I say loom, because we’re constantly subjected to London-centric news despite such affairs not really affecting much of the rest of us, which I wouldn’t normally mind but what with the Olympics coming up we’re seeing a lot more ‘Yay, London, IT WILL BENEFIT US ALL’ which I believe mostly to be lies but oh well. Apparently, the major political parties withdrew their candidates from an interview upon hearing that the BNP candidate had also been invited. read more

The Creative Process

I’m working on the scene-by-scene plan for the next Elf Blood story arc, in preparation for writing it in advance so that I can edit it to bring you a more coherent storyline. This is pretty much how I write all my long scripts; On paper, I’ll work things out as a general plot, then onto a scene-by-scene basis, then all the way down to a page-by-page level. Only once I’m done with that and am sure that the flow is correct, will I progress on to the next stage which is to write the script itself on computer. read more

Mm, Souvla.

Aloha all, sorry about the quick update, but I’ve been working late to make sure I’m finishing as much Lemon Candies as much as possible.

On the plus side, my first print work, Memecasters, is almost ready for print. Hopefully I’ll be able to send it off to the printers this week.

I would’ve gotten it done on Sunday, but I found myself absolutely stuffed full of Souvla thanks to my good friend Christakis. Mmm, laaaamb. And stuffed vine leaves. And potatoes.

Also, that’s supposed to be a crowd in the background of the last panel. Yeah, you may have to put up with this for a few pages I’m afraid! read more

On the use of the word ‘Gwailo’

It’s been a couple of weeks since it was actually discussed near me, but the issue came back to me in the shower this morning (not sure why but hey, let’s roll with it!)

Somebody at the Drink and Draw meetup had commented on how they had recently begun finding the word ‘Gwailo’ a bit awkward, having previously thought it a quaint nickname. For those of you not in the know, ‘Gwailo’ is the term used by Hong Kong Chinese to refer to white westerners, usually in an affectionately disparaging way (bear with me on this). read more

Draw Something AWESOME

Arcadian Action

So, Kid Icarus: Uprising came out last week for the 3DS. Now, I wouldn’t qualify myself as a fan of the series, having never played any of the original, but I’d absorbed enough information over the past few years to experience a kind of… Sympathetic nostalgia over the release of the game. Perhaps the little throwbacks the game constantly makes to its 8-bit roots revive memories of the original Gameboy Brick for me, and that’s a delightful trip down memory lane.

Playing the game as it stands now, however, is pretty damn fun. Of course, it’s a complete turn about face from its platforming/metroidvania origins, but the new direction is quite entertaining. The format of the levels comes in three stages; An initial, bullet-hell style on-railes shooter flight section, a second ground-based section that feels quite God-Handy to me (that’s my frame of reference, feel free to use your own!) and the final boss segment which will probably be more familiar to console action players than me in my RPG experience. It’s fast-paced and frenetic, with plenty of baddies, loot and customisation to keep you keen throughout. read more

The Learning Curve

There’s one thing that doing a webcomic twice-a-week teaches you, and that is that you must always be adapting and learning, improving upon yourself and your abilities to keep people reading. For me, the majority of my learning has been in the art; It’s fairly obvious from flicking to and from the first page to the most recent one that my style has improved substantially over the last couple of years.

What I want to do now is to really get to grips with and refine my writing. I do consider myself more of a writer than an artist, but the way in which I create Elf Blood makes the quality of the writing suffer somewhat. I have the plans worked out on a page-by-page basis, but I don’t actually write the script page until the week of production. While this permits me to incorporate changes and recommendations easily, I feel it doesn’t allow me to give as much attention as it, and you the readers, deserve. read more

Yup, that’s Mara, as drawn by various members of the Manchester Drink and Draw meetup. Isn’t it awesome? 😀 I got to draw some other peoples’ characters as well, but sadly I do not have them to hand to show you. There’s something fun about drawing other peoples’ characters for a change, since theire personalities and designs are so different from your own. It’s amazing how much the creative process changes form person to person, and there’s a lot we can all learn from each other as artists and writers! read more

Hello all, hope you’re doing well! I just thought I’d share with you my last Saturday, and hopefully it’ll brighten your lives just as it brightened mine. As Mansonbot (Who is, you’ll be pleased to hear, safely tucked back up in his cage) mentioned, I went back to Glasgow last weekend for Mother’s day. I always take the time to visit with some of my friends still living there, many of whom I still keep in touch with regularly via internet. It’s always much better to meet in person, especially if you miss the banter and friendship of the people who mean so much to you. read more
