One of Those Weeks

Well, as hectic as last week was, it’s proved to be a really valuable one for me in terms of creativity – and, more importantly, in making further progress to being able to do this sort of thing for a living.

It’s always brilliant when you get some good advice, or you learn a new tool or technique, or you’re simply proud of your progress on a piece of work. It makes everything seem just that much better, that much more worth doing. It makes you feel good about you and your skills. It makes you feel hopeful for the future. read more

Twitch, and not just because of my evening coffee.

Hullo everyone! Hope you’re all doing well.

Not a long post today, but a quick straw poll (not literally, I’ve no idea where my polls plugin has gone) – I’ve been experimenting with Twitch as of recent, tying into some games I play with friends. We’ve been planning on streaming us playing a variety of games, with a few staples (ArmA III mainly) maybe once a week or so.

Now,  having had a brainwave (that, according to the search we did in Twitch itself, was neither original nor unique to us), I’m thinking of streaming whenever I work on the comic. Of course, it’d incur a bit of spoiling, so you might not want to watch it if you’d rather enjoy the comic ‘as it occurs’. But I thought it might be nice for you to see my work in action, especially as it adds no extra overhead onto my workload! I mean, I’m drawing anyway, streaming and talking about what I’m doing won’t add a massive amount of time and effort on, I suspect! read more

Lighting The Fire

Y’know when you do that thing where you put something off for a long time, and when you come to finally do it, it’s a complete mess and you realise you’ve got a whole lot more work you gotta do?

That totally just happened to me. I’ve been sitting on this script for a while. Two years, in fact, it’s been ready for submission – or so I thought. The past week was sufficiently… intense that I was motivated to push along the path towards working as a writer. When I came to review the work that I’d already done, however, I realised that in the intervening two years, I’ve learned a lot more about my craft, and the requirements around it. The script, while still good, was not excellent, and is in need of a dialogue edit. The synopsis is atrocious, and needs a massive overhaul. read more

Weekend Enjoyment – Go!

Hullo all! I’m just going to keep the post short and sweet today, as I’d quite like to get a spot of writing done before I hit the hay for the evening!

This weekend, I will be looking forward to:

  • The aforementioned writing. I’m doing quite well at it, and I’ve been able to apply a LOT of the stuff I’ve learned in the past couple of years. I’m quite happy now to strip out entire paragraphs if I feel that they’re not advancing character or plot, and replace or condense them with exciting, interesting reading!
  • Payday. This also means Lego Day, although I now have a <50% chance of getting a new minifig in the current minifig trading series. Will probably get a little Star Wars lego kit or something.
  • Friday Night at Casa de Me Amigo. Fun times modding games, good chat, and general awesomeness. Yes, we are very nerdy.
  • Jambalaya. I’ve not made it in a while, but it seemed like the thing to cook.

    Stuff I’ve Eaten This Weekend

    Have you ever tried Dhosa? It’s one of the greatest things you’ll ever eat, I can promise you that. How to descibe it… It’s kind of like a South Indian crepe, rolled out reaaaaally flat and toasted so that it curls back round on itself. I personally like to have mine stuffed with Chicken Masala – It’s tasty enough that I don’t mind losing some Dhosa real-estate for using with the dips.

    Hold on tight!

    Hullo all you fabulous people! Hope you’re all weathering the storms reasonably well wherever you are (if, indeed, you are having storms). It’s been pretty hefty weather over this way the last few days. Hell, travelling back from Manchester yesterday I could feel the train swaying from side to side under the force of the wind! Flood warning after flood warning came in on the weather, and the whole south of Scotland looked like some sort of winter wonderland. If said wonderland were run by The Joker.     Gnaagh, exercise!

    Welp, we’re well into the new year now, and it’s about time for new years’ resolutions and improvement plans to kick into gear. I started mine by going to the swimming pool this morning, for the first time in about 3 weeks.

    Actually did not too badly – Didn’t come away from the pool too exhausted, and I didn’t get the headache or nausea I sometimes get after lapsing on my exercise (yeah, I’m really not that fit). For some reason, though, I couldn’t keep me eyes open through the afternoon which, as an artist, is a wee bit of a disadvantage! That, coupled with some aches in muscles that haven’t seen use over Christmas did somewhat make me feel incredibly… Bleh. read more

    Just Some Cartoons

    Ahoy hoy everybody,

    I just want to start off today’s post with a few words about the Charlie Hebdo killings – No matter what your opinion on the stuff they were publishing, choosing murder as a response is brutish. In fact, words really can’t do justice to the senselessness of the massacre. They may have been offensive, but surely that didn’t merit their executions?

    And, potentially at the risk of annoying some folks but I honestly believe this about any religion – Muhammad (pbuh) is a big boy. He doesn’t need people to defend or avenge him. And I certainly don’t think he would have advocated wholesale slaughter just because people were offensive about him. My uncle has a saying – you can’t be a buddha unless you can laugh at yourself. I’m inclined to agree, and surely the same applies to prophets and saints everywhere. read more

    Gah, late again!

    Hullo everybody, hope you’re all doing well!

    Unfortunately, I’m uploading this at ten-to-two AM again; I really must manage my time better, but stuff just keeps on popping up at the weekends. One of the benefits of moving back to Glasgow I suppose, I’m never stuck for stuff to do! It’ll all be fine once I move into my own place, I think, then I can be in full control of my own schedule. Fingers crossed it’ll happen soon!

    Anyway, I was going to go into detail about my backgrounds from today’s page, but I think I’ll leave that until Friday to do. In the meantime, bed and then work in the morning! read more

    Happy New Yeeeear!

    Happy New Year, everybody!

    I hope you’ve had an excellent time, and that you’re looking forward to this year as much as I am! I can’t tell you how happy I am to be back up in Glasgow, and not have to think about heading back down south in a few days’ time! It’s been a rollercoaster of a year, with highs and lows a-plenty; let’s hope that 2015 is even better!

    What are your hopes and aims for this year? Mine are to get better at all aspects of my art (although I must say I think I’ve improved quite a bit even since the start of the year), to lose a good chunk of weight (who knows, I might even write in Slimblog again to help me!), and to take the next step in my creative career by actually submitting works to publishers as I complete them. read more
