We have lost another great contributor to our collective culture. Terry Pratchett, noted author and creator of the Discworld universe, passed away yesterday after eight years of battlng Alzheimers.

I’m sure most of you reading this will be familiar with his works, and will also miss his curious and witty writing style. He wrote characters with whom we could relate, even though they were worlds away in a fantasy universe. He wrote characters with whom we empathised, and admired, and laughed and cheered along with. He wrote characters who we wish that we might meet. read more

The Little Things

So, today I got a little award from work, a token of recognition for the things that I’ve done since starting this new job. It’s amazing how much a gesture like this is, and how little the material reward actually matters – it was the letter detailing the reasons for my award that really bucked me up and gave me that good feeling, the recognition itself that was the ultimate reward.

Recognition is important, whether it’s in the workplace or outside, and I don’t feel people get or give it as much as they should. Most people, if they’re happy and satisfied with a service or a product, will simply move on without saying so much as a thank you. They will only say something when they are disappointed, to complain. read more

Another Star Joins the Heavens

Leonard Nimoy has passed on.

As one of my friends remarked, it felt like he would always be there. He was this cosmic force, this stalwart not just of acting and science fiction, but of life also. He was a kind-hearted, wise, likeable man, and doubtless he has inspired thousands across the fields of art and science. It will be a long, long time before we see another quite like him. He was never afraid to laugh at himself, or to lampoon the projects with which he had involved himself – for he knew that whenever we were laughing, we laughed with him, lovingly at his work, as friends might do. read more

So, I started watching Breaking Bad…

I sorely regret not getting into this the first time around. What with Better Call Saul being lauded left, right and centre, I thought I’d actually get round to watching Breaking Bad so that I could eventually get on to watching Better Call Saul.

Even before I actually started watching it, I was pretty impressed. I see a good number of X-Files alumni on the staff – Vince Gilligan clearly knows quality when he’s worked with it. And then there’s the story – the characters develop nicely, I get real emotion from them, the storylines are interesting and the drama is broken up with enough humour to be entertaining and gripping. It’s tense, it’s heartbreaking, and above all it’s very, very likeable. Yeah, there’s loads of bad people doing bad things (and more than a few good people doing bad things) but they’re given sufficient characterisation to be interesting, engaging, even occasionally relatable people. read more

Some thoughts: Monster Hunter 4

Ahoy hoy, everybody!

In my spots of spare-time between doing the comic (when I really should be writing, or practicing my acrylics and pastels) this weekend I’ve been playing copious amounts of Monster Hunter 4 on my New 3DS. I’m going to summarize it in general here, before picking out the fun bits that I really enjoy:

Is it worth getting? Yes.

Why? It’s a fun, action-packed romp where you get to fight dinosaurs in hand-to-hand combat.

How different is it from other Monster Hunter games? Not very. As much as any Monster Hunter game differs from another. Although it has maybe one or two more gimmicks that do offer some interesting strategic choices. read more

Quick – Yet Awesome!

Aloha everyone! Hope you’ve been having a great week!

I thought I’d have some time to write a decent length post today, but rather fortunately I was too pressed to do so. My Grandpa, who you might remember from last Friday’s post, got out of the hospital today and is now back at home. He seems to be even more lucid and stronger than he has been over the last few years. He’s still confusing one or two things, which is to be expected of somebody suffering from any amount of dementia – but he’s doing so well. read more

The New 3DS – First Impressions

Well, after what was an incredibly tough week, I was incredibly glad when the 13th rolled round, for this was the European release date for the New 3DS. I’d pre-ordered my New 3DSXL with a copy of Monster Hunter 4 (which I will wax lyrical on later on in the week, no doubt).

What’s different about the new 3DS? Well, the immediately noticeable difference is that it integrates into the base device the extra controls that previously the Circle Pad Pro attachment had added. It actually looks pretty decent, for having more buttons than an A380’s cockpit, although many might be curious about the implementation of the second analogue stick – In order to minimise the real-estate taken up, the right-hand analogue stick is actually a little pressure nub – It doesn’t slide or move anywhere really, it just measures how hard you’re pushing it in any given direction. It looks a bit weird, it takes a while to figure out really, and I don’t know how it’ll hold up over long-term use. But it does work, and surprisingly well! read more

A Damn Good Man.

As I was drawing this page, I began to notice just how much Mortessa’s Accountant (the elderly chap telling the tale, for those of you who have forgotten) resembles my grandpa.

My grandpa is a great guy – Unfortunately, he’s pretty much on the downward slope right now. He has vascular dementia, and a recent infection afflicted him with delerium, driving him out of the house and into the hospital – The staff of which I would like to take this opportunity to thank profusely. The Royal Alexandra Hospital, the NHS, and the quality, polite, and professional staff who work there – you’ve always done right by me and my family. read more

A brief post.

Hi all, apologies for another brief post – A combination of having nothing useful to say, physical fatigue, and psychological maladjustment. Nothing to worry about, my mind’s just playing games with me, old wounds etc. My problem, and fortunately I’m back home where my friends and family can help me out.

Anyway, hopefully I’ll be in a more chipper mood on Friday. See you all then, I’m sure!

Unimportant musings.

Why do supermarkets in the UK not stock watermelon juice? I mean, surely out of all the fruits it must be the easiest to produce juice from? I freakin’ love watermelon juice, and you get it in most hotels, so why can’t I buy it? Do I have to be part of some sort of weird cult or elite club to get some? Who the hell is guarding all the watermelons and the juicers that go with them? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I sure do love having actual slices of watermelon and eating them, but watermelon juice just concentrates the delicious melony flavour in an easily transported form! read more
