Japes and games and haute cuisine, oh my!

It’s the weekend again, hooray! And I’m looking forward to Friday night more than ever today – Some of my pals are coming round for games, fine dining, and general palling around.

The plan is for the evening to be built around a little piece of roleplaying nonsense that we haven’t done in a while – Mashup Roleplaying. I think I might have mentioned it before, but for the benefit of those who I haven’t told, the premise is simple: Each player constructs a very simple character sheet, with very generalised skills and a high-level concept (Warrior, Sharpshooter, Charmer, that sort of thing). They then put a number of genres into a hat, and a number of settings into another. Two genres are then pulled out, along with a setting, and the GM has five minutes to come up with a quick scenario using those parameters for the players to roleplay in. Meta-pacing

Greetings, folks!

Well, I’m pleased to report that Roddy Hart and the Lonesome Fire’s appearance on the Late Late Show was a resounding success, and the lads’ve been booked on for a week’s residency as a result! We’re all incredibly proud of them!

Anyway, returning to the world of Elf Blood, I hope that you’re enjoying the story so far! I must say, it’s a nice change to do a story that’s almost wall-to-wall action, interspersed with the (relatively) quiet scenes of TKO and the birth of her child. I’ve been going over the plot outline of the next Elf Blood story – Originally, I had planned a dungeon-crawler style romp, but it struck me that having another action-oriented story immediately after this one (well, not immediately after, as you get an issue of Mei Wu in between them!) would be be a little fatiguing. While action is all well and good, I don’t think you get the same value as a reader than with a more involved storyline, and doesn’t let you care about the characters as much. There’s also the texture of the meta-plotting to consider – It’s nice to change up the flow, by following intense action with quieter drama, so as to let the audience ‘rest and recover’, as it were. read more

Mashup!

One of the most fun things about being a Standard Nerd is the ability to indulge in some roleplaying games from time-to-time. Mostly, my friends and I have been playing the old standbys – D&D, WFRP, Paranoia etc.

What do you do when you just want a quick and simple game? Well, we came up with what we thought was a pretty ingenious solution; As I’m down here in Manchester and they’re back up in Glasgow, we’ve had to conduct our recent RPG sessions using Voice Over IP. Which of course, leaves the problem of rolling dice. It’s amazing what you can get an IRC bot to do! Ultimately, our IRC guru hacked up a few modifications to the bot: the dice roller (xdy), and also a mashup generator. read more
