Political Fear

As I write this, it’s 0430 and we’re well on our way to leaving the European Union.

This is a bad thing. A bad. Thing.

The only consolation is that Scotland thus far seems to be majority Remain, which suggests a sufficiently different political landscape from the rest of the UK – suggesting also that perhaps, just perhaps, we’re not as united as the myopic, imperial haze likes to think we are.

I’d like to thank Remain-ers everywhere, and I’m proud to see that the two regions I have closest ties to, Manchester and Newcastle, voted in favour of Remain. You guys rock – keep fighting the good fight. read more

Why I won’t be buying the new Harry Potter book.

Unlike most of my other politics posts, I’m going to keep this one relatively short and sweet (partially to counter the bitterness I feel over the entire affair).

Much is being made over the announcement that there is a new Harry Potter book coming out, and fandom around the world is rejoicing. I, however, have made the conscious decision not to purchase the book.

That’s not to say that I don’t like Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter. The very first book, way back in the mists of time now, I consumed in a single night – the only book I have ever done so. I was thrilled beyond excitement when they commissioned the films. read more

Politics sucks

Hullo folks, just a quick post today – I’m afraid I’ve been ground down a fair bit this evening with politics and people scoring cheap shots. Between the looming possibility of President Trump and the constant siege Scottish pro-independence supporters seem to be under from the government and the media… It amazes me how we have survived as a species when we have shown ourselves to be so resistant to change, so unprogressive, so utterly tribal, greedy, and vile a species. The ratio of times I am impressed with our achievements versus times I wish we had a reset button keeps on getting smaller and more depressing. read more

Damnable Politics

Now, since the independence referendum and the run-up to the recent General Election, I think it’s safe to say that the Labour Party have not been my favourite political group on the planet – I’ve found their rhetoric, their tactics, and their lack of ability (or indeed desire) to provide adequate opposition to the Tory government.

However, a lot of my friends in England still adhere to Labour, because otherwise there is no real credible force for the left wing to attach themselves to. I had high hopes for the Green party in England, to help restore a left wing bent to politics in the region, but sadly they just didn’t have the clout to convince people. And so a lot of voters stuck with Labour, because of what the party stood for in the past, and represented. read more

Aaaaand the results are in…

Well, I think I can safely say that the most recent General Election results were… Bittersweet, for me. On the one hand, the SNP dominate the Scottish political landscape in terms of seats won, and with a near 50% vote share aren’t too shabby when it comes down to proportional numbers – compare to the 2010 election where Labour won nearly 70% of seats with just over 40% of the popular vote.

On the other hand, the Conservatives got back into power entirely on their own merit – no need for coalition deals with the Liberal Democrats this time. Nor were the SNP able to assist the Labour party in forming any kind of government – the number of seats lost by Labour to the SNP would still have left them with a considerable gap to fill in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland in order to form even a minority government. read more

Politics – Blehhh

Well, it’s been an eventful run-up to the 2015 General Election here in the UK so far. The smears and negativity are flying around thick and fast, within the political parties, the media, and the general public. It’s turned into one massively horribly managed PR exercise, with most parties seemingly having deployed the most childish, least experienced comms teams they could get their grubby hands on.

Seriously, what the hell has happened to politics? Now, I’m going to confess my bias immediately – you all knew that I campaigned for the Yes side in the referendum, and my affiliation lies with the SNP. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t respect the leaders of the other parties, or their representatives. read more

UK Politics – Take Note!

Okay class, the following post is directed at those engaged in UK politics, so the rest of you are free to leave or stay as you please.

In the run-up to November 11th, it becomes increasingly important to pay close attention to what we are sharing and saying on Facebook. One major problem that I’m seeing crop up here and there is the sharing of photos from an organisation that calls itself ‘Britain First’.

Britain First are far from the patriotic guardians of Britain’s future that they portray themselves as. They are, in fact, a motley collection of thugs, racists, sectarians, and fascists. They are the most reprehensible type of political scum, who prey on well-meaning folk through the liberal application of trickery, deceit, and exploitation. read more

Not Mei Wu – More Politics

Hi everyone,

Sorry for hijacking the comic directly, but this is even MORE important than the Independence Referendum.

Hong Kong, my birth city, home to half my family, is undergoing real political strife right now. And I could not be prouder of the people making a stand.

It’s going to be a dangerous, difficult time for Hong Kong. And I doubt we can affect real political change – Beijing is simply too powerful to bow to the protests of the people.

But we must speak up.

If we don’t protest like this, Beijing will simply steamroll over us, taking away freedom and control and imposing the mainland system on Hong Kong. We need to let them know that we will resist, and that if that is what they wish, then they had better be prepared to win us over, one by one. read more

I’m going to be up-front with the common sense here; there’s no need for aggressive barracking and egging. We’re the Yes campaign, we’re a civilised revolution, and we’re a damn sight classier than throwing foodstuff at people we don’t like. The kind of people who would do this are only making it harder to make our case; you might as well be handing Better Together whole clips of 5.56 if you believe this kind of behaviour is acceptable. read more

People are people, y’know?

Now, I’m not sure how much the major news item in the UK seeps out into the world at large, but in a few weeks’ time one of the most important days in our political history will come to pass. It is the referendum on independence for Scotland, wherein the Scottish people choose whether or not to remain as a constituent part of the United Kingdom, or to strike out on its own as an autonomous nation for the first time in three centuries.

You’ll probably see me mentioning this a few times in the run-up; I’m a Yes voter, convinced of the opportunities offered by seceding from the union. However, in this post, I want to address an overarching topic before going on later to my arguments as to voting Yes. read more
