So, roughly how awesome is The Hobbit Pt. I now that it’s been released on DVD and Bluray?
SO AWESOME.
Watching it again has made me think, without Tolkien, how much of modern literature, film, comics etc. would exist? Certainly, this comic would probably never have been developed in the direction I’ve taken it. Hell, if it even existed, it would probably still be about vampires and nowhere near as good! (If that statement confuses you, ask and it shall be explained).
Tolkien had an incredibly scholarly approach to his storytelling, with a capacity for worldbuilding that few of us could ever DREAM of possessing. This attention to detail, and fabricating an entire world’s history within which to establish an epic, sweeping story is something that I hugely admire about the man’s work and strive to emulate with every universe I create. I remember being fascinated as a child merely by the maps of Middle-Earth, and tracking the heroes’ journey across the land. Never quite got round to the Silmarillion, though, but I suspect now in my adulthood I would find it absolutely fascinating. I think it’s safe to say that, when I buy my own house, there will definitely be a place on my bookshelf for Tolkien! It can sit beside the shelf for Masamune Shirow’s stuff 😀 read more
