Spring, maybe, eventually?

Well, after an unusually long winter period, it looks like we’re FINALLY getting a little bit of spring. I won’t deny it’s still a touch chilly, but at least for the last couple of days I haven’t had to have the heating on.

There’s something particularly draining about winter. Odd coming from somebody who lived in Scotland, I know, but over the last few months I’ve gotten back from work and been unable to discipline myself into doing all that much. I’m so far behind in my print work that I’m never going to get it released this year, and so there’s no point in me attending any conventions to sell stuff. There are so many other projects I’ve been neglecting. All because I feel I can’t be bothered. read more

Social Media etc: Have your say!

Now, I’m sure that many of you will have noticed (unless you’ve got some clever scripting that excludes such things from the site) that I have a twitter account (that never really gets updated unless I’m tweeting about a comic page going up) and a Facebook page (which gets updated a little more frequently with bonus art, but for some reason isn’t directly linked to and is something I should sort out).

Part of the reason I don’t update these accounts so often is because I’m not hugely sure what to put on there! So I’m looking for suggestions. Do you guys want me to update these more frequently? What sort of thing should I put up there that would interest you? Are you interested in what I’m drawing, how I’m drawing it, what ideas I’ve come up with that day? Hell, do you want to know what I’m eating, what games I’m playing? 😛 Let me know! I’d love the chance to engage more with the community, and I’m fully aware that I’m not using the social media stuff to its fullest. I just don’t want to try and force it, really. I want to put more up there that you guys want to see. read more

Another recipe: Dry Carbonara

Another recipe, a quick and dirty one that provides a satisfying dish for when you can’t be bothered making much!

Ingredients:

75g of spaghetti
2 slices of bacon (actual bacon rashers, not streaky bacon)
1 egg
2-3 heaped tbsp freshly grated parmesan cheese

– Slice the bacon into small bits
– Fry the bacon; No oil necessary, just heat the pan and stir-fry. If you like, you can chop some garlic and throw it in at this stage as well.
– Boil the spaghetti (10 minutes, or whatever it says on the packet)
– Break the egg into a bowl and beat. Add the grated parmesan to the bowl.
– When the spaghetti is done, drain it and immediately return it to the saucepan. Turn the heat off.
– Pour the beaten egg into the saucepan, stirring so that it coats the pasta. The residual heat will cook the egg; You’ll know it’s done when there’s no liquid egg left.
– Add the bacon and stir it in well.
– Serve on a plate or in a bowl. quick and straightforward! read more

Recipe time! Pork Belly with Spiced Sweet Potato Hash

Hullo all, it’s very very late so instead of posting  a rant I thought I’d share a recipe I’ll be making with friends this weekend instead!

Ingredients:

0.5 kg pork belly strips
1 red onion
1 white/brown onion
1 fresh chilli, chopped
2 sweet potatoes
Powdered Five Spice
Salt
Pepper
Vegetable Oil

Method:

Pork:
– Rub salt, pepper and powdered five spice into the pork belly strips.
– Slice the red onion into rings and lay these at the bottom of a roasting tin to form a stable base.
– Lay the pork belly strips on top of the red onion slices and cover the roasting tin with foil.
– Place in pre-heated oven at 180 Degrees C, for one hour. read more

Now, as many of you know, I’m not originally from Manchester, or even Glasgow. No, I hail from the far-off magical land known as Hong Kong. While I was born there to one British parent and while it was still a colony, I still consider myself (and have had to deal with many of the issues pertaining to being) an immigrant, having moved when I was about five or so. Okay, I’ll happily admit that much of it has worn off, having lived in the UK for a good number of years. But I still get bloody angry when I hear people complain about immigration. read more

Rekindling the creative spark

I’ve got a creative fire in my belly this week. Not entirely sure why, but I reckon it’s to do with the excitement of working on the new story arc! I’ve been inspired to crack on with it, I’ve been driven to write more of my script for submission, I’ve had the impetus to write more of my novel, and I’ve even had the chance to draw a bit more of Memecasters Book 2. I still wish I had more time to write and to draw, but right now, with the day getting longer and the post-Christmas malaise finally dying down, I’m finding it easier to get into my creative work again. I’ve not yet recaptured the energy I had, say, two years ago, but that’s probably down to me still not getting enough quality sleep and messing up my weekends. Still, it’s getting easier, and I’ve got a lot of my passion back, so it’s all good eh? read more

Poirot: What’s not to like?

I’ve been quite busy recently working up some comics to cover myself while I’m away, so as a result I’ve been up quite late a few nights. I like to have the TV on in the background while I draw, and usually I’m watching Channel Dave (Yes, non-UKians, we have a channel called Dave, and it consists almost entirely of Top Gear and QI) but recently it’s been showing films of which I have little interest, and none of the other channels have had anything worth watching.

Except for ITV 2 (or 3, I forget which). Apparently in the late evening, but prior to midnight, they show a lot of my favouritestest detective show EVER. Agatha Christie’s Poirot, the iconic David Suchet series. If you guys haven’t seen these, I highly recommend them! Now, I love TV Poirot at the best of times: It’s set in the interbellum, it’s properly classy and the art deco aesthetic is phenomenally exciting. But the ITV series of Poirot is just fantastic. The production values are exceptional, and the huge investment poured into the original series has clearly paid off; They have stood the test of time incredibly well, and look just as fresh as if they had been shot today. read more

Perspective Shift!

Bonjour, tout le monde!

It’s been a pretty good week for me vis-á-vis creativity; I’ve been struggling with starting my novel yet again, and I’d been losing hope for it. However, I realised that what I was doing was struggling to fit an idea that I’d been working on since I had started uni to my current style and outlook on life. The story was simply about awesome technology in an awesome city which, while appealing, makes for an incredibly dull plot.

So what I did was revamp the characters, give up my sentimental hold on the plot and shook it up a bit without disturbing the overall flow, and approach the planning of the novel from a completely different angle. The important part (interestingly enough related to one of my dayjob tasks involving a bit of data modelling) was to consider not simply the overall flow of the plot, but to consider events, interested parties and people. By using these and branching off interesting, useful properties facts and sub-events from these, I was able to relate them to each other more organically, and even developed brand new items for the plot that now that I’ve realised it, make complete logical sense.
