Lunch Money!

I’ve rewritten the blog post for today, as… Well, if you scroll down to the bottom you’ll see for yourself. It”s quite terrifying how badly microsleeps affect your brain’s language centre. Seriously, it reads like I’ve been zombified or something.

Anyhoo, yes, the phrase ‘Lunch Money, Bitch!”; I’m not sure if anyone else is quite as on-board with it as I am, but I love it so much that I’ve started using it as test data when I’m programming! If you’re absolutely confused about what I’m talking about, then this should refresh your memory! It’s a nice, silly, punchy little phrase that I think neatly summarises all the years Carlita’s been bullied by Shanna, and the resultant joy in getting a little revenge on her. That Ixnay uses it against Kayleigh isn’t really all that significant; It’s just me shoehorning the phrase in, really. read more

Cue The Music!

I can’t remember if I’ve ever mentioned here, but certainly when giving advice I often tell people that a great way of coming up with story ideas is to listen to music and let that inspire you. Sure, it sounds a little wishy-washy, and I’m not saying it’ll work for everyone, but for people like me who envision the entire ‘cinematic’ experience in their minds first, it becomes indispensible. It’s actually why I include them tunes for each of the characters in the Elf Blood Extras; They’re usually pieces/songs that I have in my mind whenever I think of the character, or have used to shape the personality of the character. For example, Carlita’s song is Stockport Carnival by Mr. Scruff. This piece doesn’t have lyrics, or necessarily any particular meaning; but the latin sound combined with Mr. Scruff’s trademark quirky bass and electronic drums gave me the image of Carlita relaxing in the sun, drink in hand and shades on, and really helped to define the cool, sexy superspy aspect of her character. Thanks to Stockport Carnival, Carlita went from being a merc who provided info to both sides to being a hyper-competent secret agent type, with ties to the exotic. read more

New Nostalgia

Morning all!

Thought I’d re-do my blog-post, as I really don’t like just leaving you guys with a ‘blarg, I’m tired, here, have a comic’ post. You deserve better than that!

Frankly, I’m amazed I managed to get most of the post options right when I scheduled this page last night. I’ve been really tired all this week, and I’m not sure why. Probably just need to get more rest, really!

Anyhoo, this week during whatever downtime I’ve been able to get I’ve mostly been playing games that don’t involve a huge amount of button-mashing, as much of this downtime comes while I’m having dinner. I’ve mostly been focussed on two ‘games’: First up, Analogue: A Hate Story, which is a visual novel that has a good old-fashioned oriental royal family intrigue at its heart, by indie writer Christine Love. It’s a pretty interesting concept. Rather than the usual VN route of your character interacting with a load of characters, it takes the form of you exploring the logs of a derelict spacecraft, delving into the mystery of what happened on the ship, and piecing together from fragments of journals and inter-personal communications a fuller picture of what happened. It’s very well-presented, with a minimalist interface that gives it a shiny Appleish aesthetic, and an interesting mix of GUI interaction vs. Command Line interaction that appeals to me as a computer nerd and one-time hacker wannabe. read more

It’s a bit windy out!

Remember that fantastic and action-packed weekend I was talking about on Friday? Yeeeeah, I think I managed to achieve about 20% of that due to the inclement weather, which made even going to the corner store a trek and a half. Fortunately, that 20% I did manage to get done was jam-packed with awesomeness, due in no small part to the Avengers film.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the Marvel studios films I’ve seen thus far, and we all knew that they were eventually leading towards this fantastic, spectacular outing. I’m not going to do a full review here, but here are the pertinent parts: read more

How’s your weekend looking?

Sometimes, between work and illustration, it can all pile up and get a bit stressful. You might begin to question your resolve, your ability, and your desires to do any of your things, even those tha give you most joy.

Most would argue that such a state is not desireable. And yes, I suppose it’s not healthy to permanently exist like that; but you know what? It makes weekends like this weekend so much better. It’s making the sweet even sweeter, the enjoyable more fun. It makes you appreciate the good things. read more

Prejudice against the Prejudiced.

This rant will get mildly political, so those of you just here for the comics are excused from class early!

Now, I’m sure I’ve made mention of the British National Party in posts before the big database meltdown, but for those of you outside of the UK or who are otherwise unfamiliar with them, they are a far-right group that are gaining an alarming amount of legitimacy, mostly through disaffected areas in England.

The news story involving them this week comes as the London Mayoral elections loom over us. I say loom, because we’re constantly subjected to London-centric news despite such affairs not really affecting much of the rest of us, which I wouldn’t normally mind but what with the Olympics coming up we’re seeing a lot more ‘Yay, London, IT WILL BENEFIT US ALL’ which I believe mostly to be lies but oh well. Apparently, the major political parties withdrew their candidates from an interview upon hearing that the BNP candidate had also been invited. read more

The Creative Process

I’m working on the scene-by-scene plan for the next Elf Blood story arc, in preparation for writing it in advance so that I can edit it to bring you a more coherent storyline. This is pretty much how I write all my long scripts; On paper, I’ll work things out as a general plot, then onto a scene-by-scene basis, then all the way down to a page-by-page level. Only once I’m done with that and am sure that the flow is correct, will I progress on to the next stage which is to write the script itself on computer. read more

Mm, Souvla.

Aloha all, sorry about the quick update, but I’ve been working late to make sure I’m finishing as much Lemon Candies as much as possible.

On the plus side, my first print work, Memecasters, is almost ready for print. Hopefully I’ll be able to send it off to the printers this week.

I would’ve gotten it done on Sunday, but I found myself absolutely stuffed full of Souvla thanks to my good friend Christakis. Mmm, laaaamb. And stuffed vine leaves. And potatoes.

Also, that’s supposed to be a crowd in the background of the last panel. Yeah, you may have to put up with this for a few pages I’m afraid! read more
