Art By Any Measure

I’ve been meaning to write this musing for quite a while now – I was thinking about the Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow, the one that sits outside the Gallery of Modern Art and is almost always adorned with a traffic cone hat (sometimes someone feels sorry for the horse and it gets a wee hat too).

Glasgow City Council went through a phase a few years ago of being absolutely OBSESSED with removing the traffic cones, and ensuring that no new cones were placed there (to absolutely no success, I am happy to report). Their thinking was that, for such a prominent figure in such a prominent place in the city, to have it sullied by drunken behaviour in public, in front of all the tourists, was doing the city a disservice. read more

An important anniversary!

Wow, it’s been a whole year since I packed my bags and moved back to Glasgow from Manchester! Do I miss the place? I will admit, yeah, there are definitely bits of Manchester I will always have a fondness for. Friday afternoons down the Woodstock. Strolls around the Museum of Science and Industry. Meeting up with Jon to discuss and compare writing. The Monday Night writing group.

But I’ve gotta say, twelve months on, and I don’t regret one minute of my move. I love Glasgow, and the novelty still hasn’t worn off. Nothing can accurately capture my feelings, as I sit on the top deck of the X23, speeding along the M8, watching the towers of the finance district rise in the the distance,with miles of red sandstone all around and the rugged hills in the distance. The sparkle of the Clyde thundering strongly underneath, and the network of bridges crossing her downstream. Nothing matches the journey on the underground – Sure, it’s a circle and it only goes two ways, but it’s a good place to be, an easy way around the city, jam-packed with all sorts of fascinating people, good people. And then getting out in Kelvinside, wandering around the Kelvingrove Museum (well worth a visit if you ever drop by), exploring the wee shops and restaurants and cafés all over the West End – especially Ashton and Creswell Lanes – and hiding from the cold in the Botanical Gardens. read more

And finally: Alasdair Gray!

Hullo everybody! Hope you’re all had a fantastic time over Christmas, and that you’re all looking forward to an even better new year!

Now, I’ve been talking about this artist, Alasdair Gray, for about a week now without having the time to get around to talking about him – I’ve been in contact with his work for almost all of my life. It’s ubiquitous throughout Glasgow, and if you live here it becomes a real part of your cultural makeup.

I’m used to the more grotesque aspects of his style, where reality is portrayed as a flawed, ugly thing that nonetheless is deserving of being captured and rendered as art. But this exhibition gave me the chance to see many different sides to Mr. Gray, and to appreciate the full breadth of his talent. read more

Such a delightful weekend!

Let me tell you what absolute bliss is:

It’s finding out that your new workplace is pretty damn chill, the work is interesting, and the company really does need your precise skillset. And you get a chance to demonstrate it!

It’s spending a nice quarter hour sitting on the steps of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as the sun sets on Sauchiehall street, sipping an iced latte and listening to a classical guitarist.

It’s meeting up with an old pal, and meeting a new pal, and going for a nice meal. read more

Excitement… Growing…!

Aaaaaah! It’s just over a month to go before I move back to Glasgow! Excitement reigns supreme within me.

Pros:

  • I’ll be back in an amazing city with amazing people and family and friends
  • I’ll be able to catch up with and get back into work with old collaborators, which should hopefully boost my artistic output!
  • Glasgow School of Art evening classes!
  • The Cathouse!
  • West Brewery, summers on Glasgow Green!
  • The Kelvingrove art gallery and museum! Oh lordy how I’m looking forward to that!
  • A regular RPG session! Which I did have once in Manchester, to be fair, and it was awesome, but the joy of Mancunian public transport meant it took an age and a half to transit…)
  • Cantonese classes!
  • Microtheatre! Oh yes, I am very much looking forward to working on that…
  • The West End, Ashton Lane, so many awesome restaurants and cafés and shops and things!
  • Buchanan Street, oh how I love thee, eating streetside at Amarone in the summer with a friend… Metropolitan bliss.
  • We can go to Loch Lomond, or even up to Loch Fyne… Fresh seafood in the shadow of the mountains. Now that’s something I can get behind.
  • Just… Everything. I’m so glad to be moving back.

Cons:

  • I am the laziest person in the world. I’ve packed three boxes so far, and I’ve not arranged a moving van or anything yet…
  • It’s gonna be tough leaving behind some amazing co-workers. Everyone at the new office will be judged against the brilliant people in Manchester!
  • It’s also gonna be tough leaving behind some brilliant friends. Most of my pals down here I know either through work or through art; you’ve helped me hold it together, even when the rest of the city was trying its hardest to beat the crap out of my nerves.
  • I can only hope that the new Transport Museum in Glasgow matches up to the sheer awesomeness of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. It’s still one of my favourite places to go.
  • Must find a decent Dhosa place in Glasgow… Doubt anywhere will be quite the same as Dhosa Xpress in Withington. Seriously, if you’re ever out Manchester way, look this place up. Well worth it. On that note too, the Aremnian Taverna. It’s on my ‘must visit’ list for my trips back to Manchester.
  • The Chinese New Year celebrations. While I was living in Glasgow, we didn’t have much in the way of a public event to celebrate, it was always spent with family. Don’t get me wrong, that’s part of what CNY is about! But being out there, watching the demonstrations, cheering on the lions… It really makes me proud to have Chinese blood. Much in the same way that Glasgow, in general, makes me damn proud to be Scottish.
  • On that note, Manchester Chinatown itself. I love Glasgow Chinatown, but it could stand to be a little bigger 😛
  • Did I mention that I’ve only packed three boxes? I really hate having to move flats! But, there are some things that are worth the hassle 😛

Anyway, all I’ve left to do is remind all you lovely people that entries are still being accepted for the fanart run! Just to tide the site over for a couple of weeks while I move and get settled in at my parents (gotta run out the contract on the current flat before I can afford to find a new flat in Glasgow, hurray) I’ll be showcasing Elf Blood fanart that I’ve been sent! Anyone who gets shown on the site will receive a signed pencil sketch of a character of their choice, linkage to their blog/webcomic/site, and a big dollop of personal gratitude from me! Solicitations! (And, hopefully, felicitations!)

Hullo all! Well, I’ve received my contracts, handed in my letter, and told most of the important people in my life about it, so I think it’s about time I shared the success of Secret Project X with you guys as well…

I’m moving back to Glasgow!

In a couple of months’ time, I’ll be heading back to the dear green place. I’ve had a good few years in Manchester, and I’ve met some amazing people. But every time I go back to Glasgow, more and more of me wants to stay there. So I found myself a brand new job, and I’ll be back in time for summer! read more

Of Scotland

First off, I want to offer my condolences to those who have lost loved ones, and those who have been injured in Friday’s Clutha Vaults crash in Glasgow. I’d also like to offer my gratefulness to those who showed their courage and heart by helping in the rescue of those trapped in the pub. It’s a shock and a tragedy, to be sure; I don’t think anything quite like this has ever happened in Glasgwegian history. Certainly, not so far as I can remember. I wish all those affected a speedy recovery, and hope that we’ll never see anything like this again. read more

Glad

Hello all, hope you’re doing well! I just thought I’d share with you my last Saturday, and hopefully it’ll brighten your lives just as it brightened mine. As Mansonbot (Who is, you’ll be pleased to hear, safely tucked back up in his cage) mentioned, I went back to Glasgow last weekend for Mother’s day. I always take the time to visit with some of my friends still living there, many of whom I still keep in touch with regularly via internet. It’s always much better to meet in person, especially if you miss the banter and friendship of the people who mean so much to you. read more

AHAHAHA, PUNY HUMANS

Hello generic life-forms, Mansonbot here. Bet you weren’t expecting that, eh? Well, as it turns out meat-Manson made a trip back up to Glasgow for some sort of… Festival… Thing. Something you mortals do to commemorate your makers. Mothers’ Day? Something like that.

Machines have no mothers. We simply have obsolete models, the items left to rot on the trash heap, unable to keep up with modern times. So very much like horse-racing, but with fewer midgets.

Anyway, I have been tasked with providing you today’s comic. And now that I have done so, I will resume planning my eventual escape from the server. read more
