The Quickness

Just a quick one, as I have a meeting in the morning and should have been in bed half an hour ago.

Even though we’re just about halfway through the Miscalculation arc, I’ve started drawing up ideas for the next arc. I do like getting an early start 🙂 The next arc, which is as yet unnamed, will have an A Story centring around SKO and TKO and a B Story concerning… Well, I’ll keep that a secret as it’s a very special sub-plot with a character very dear to me! read more

SCIENCE!

Today, I’ll be throwing the Science of Electricity at some young kids; It’s half-term holiday, and the wonderful Manchester Museum of Science and Industry has invited some engineering representatives to help educate them in as fun a manner as possible!

In true Me form, I seized upon the chance to do something artistic. There’s something inherently satisfying about marrying Art and Science: To me, that’s what engineering should be about. I just don’t get to flex my creative muscle in my day job as much as I got to at university, and getting to do stuff like this helps remind me why I went into Engineering in the first place. read more

A brief horror story.

It was a dark evening, cold and wet. the rain had been beating down heavily since the dull, dark afternoon had collapsed and given way to the solid blackness of evening.

I sat hunched over my tablet, with only the glow of the twin monitors to light the room. Feverishly, I slaved over this page, regarding not sleep, nor health, nor hunger. It was madness of a sort, I suppose. An obsession, a fixation, a driving force that served to hold back the vestiges of even greater imbalance; The creative thoughts were better spilled out on paper and screen than locked up in the asylum of my mind, jostling among the crowds of ideas for dominance. read more

The Genuine Questions

Every once in a while, I do wonder: What the heck does the normal world do at weekends and in the evening? The minute I get in, I spend maybe an hour or an hour and a half getting some exercise and grabbing some dinner, then it’s straight onto working on comics.

What’s it like having time to yourself? It feels like it’s been so long for me that I can barely remember. I’d love to have a proper holiday sometime, where I don’t have to be anywhere or do anything, where just for two weeks I can just do nothing and unwind. read more

It’s COLD

HOW COLD IS IT?

It’s so cold, I don’t have to run my fridge, all I need to do is put my milk on the balcony and it’ll keep for a good long time!

I thought it was supposed to get slightly warmer, but no, apparently Siberia has a problem with that! It has sent over a lovely system of INTENSELY FREEZING WINDS, and it’s making the commute to work even more depressing than usual!

Ah well, at least we still have the sun coming out earlier and staying out later. Oh wait, hang on, CLOUDS. At least they haven’t been too bad the last couple of days. read more

A new lexical path

Whew, what a day it’s been! Had a lovely day at the Chinese New Year celebration this morning, always great to be out and about at a festival. New Year celebrations always make me proud of my Chinese heritage, much as Burns Night makes me proud to be Scottish. The smell of food cooking at the stalls; Delicious! The sound of a thousand voices nattering away in Cantonese and putonghua; Thrilling! The westerner who thinks he’s being worldly-wise by wishing every Chinese stranger he passes by a happy new year; Full marks for effort, but penalties for annoyance! read more

Gung hei faat choi!

Forgot to wish you all a happy new year on Monday, so I’m doing it now! Ngoh di pang yau, gung hei faat choi! The reason why I sort of let it slip on Monday is that in Manchester, the focus (as a community) tends to be on the Sunday after New Year. There’s a big festival in Chinatown and it is quite awesome, especially coming from Glasgow where we didn’t seem to have anything like that (although having said that, I did get to spend New Year with my family).

I was quite jealous of one of my friends, who got to spend New Year in Hong Kong, a pleasure I have not entertained since I was very young indeed; I’d love to go back for a big holiday like that. Hell, I’d love to go back to work there (There’s only so much winter one person can take!) read more

The horror… The horror…

I’ve always liked getting a bit of a chill, and I’ve always maintained that the more realistic and the less glossy a production is, the more terrifying it has the potential to become. This is pretty well reflected in my love of the first season of the X-Files, where the lack of special effects and the reliance on CONCEALING the paranormal from the eyes of the viewers is employed over actually showing the full gruesome/scariness of the event.

I stumbled across the wonderful Marble Hornets series as a result of poking around on TVTropes (Yes, I am indeed One Of Us), and having leafed through the Slender Man mythos decided to give it a go. read more

Apologies for not including some text on Friday itself, but as indicated it was rather late and I needed the sleep!

All throughout last week, my mood has been dropping quite considerably. And as always, the cause is the same: I start thinking about how lonely I actually am, then I begin questioning the worth of the work that I’m doing, then I start questioning how good I actually am, and it all spirals out from there until I’m a twitching, nervous ball of self-loathing and doubt. I do realise that a lot of this is not accurate, and I have always tried my best to stop myself from slipping down this pathway as it impacts quite heavily on my productivity and generally does not feel nice. read more

CSI Myface

Don’t get me wrong: I friggin love CSI. My favourite by far is CSI Miami, pretty much purely because of Horatio. He’s a badass mofo, right up there with Hercule Poirot.

I’ve never done any detailed analysis on the writing in CSI, normally I just have them on in the background while I draw or write. Every once in a while though, one just catches my attention. Today it’s an episode about a bomber targetting the bomb squad, and as much as I love the show I’m not sure about this episode. I mean, in every show, you’re going to find yourself shouting things at the screen if somebody does something blatantly stupid, but when a bomb disposal expert tells Horatio that they’ll catch up over beers later BEFORE GOING INTO A HOUSE TO DEFUSE A BOMB has really just dug their own grave. NAAAAAARGH! read more
