So, the new season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is almost here; For those of you not in the know, it’s a very, VERY dark TV series that explores the impact of technology on society through dramatic form. Going over the synopses for the first series, the future presented in this somehwat hellish universe is utterly terrifying. People under the thumb of ruling parties, corporations, their own greed and sadism; It’s not only a grim, bleak portrayal of the future, but serves to analyse the social dystopia we inhabit here and now.

Guten tag, wie gehts mein freunds?
(German may or may not be authentic)
Had to pre-load this, as I’m making a quick trip to Germany on business. Should actually be heading back shortly in fact, but I do enjoy central Europe in the winter. Save for the flight delays.
Anyway, enjoy today’s strip, and I’ll see you on Friday with a more substantial update!
Auf wiedersehn,

Part 2 of our impromptu writing class/musing continues today with a little delving into world-building.
The most successful properties and franchises have flourished because they have constructed plausible, engaging universes around themselves. Even for the most fantastic of stories, a well designed ‘world’ can enhance the reader’s suspension of disbelief and provide an interesting background against which the characters and plot can develop. Without it, it’s that much harder to flesh out the characters and their motivations, or to truly grasp the measure of their personality as there’s not much to compare them to. As readers, in order to relate to and care for the characters we need to know a little bit about where they come from, what they’ve experienced, what drives them.
Aloha everybody, I’ve been making a concerted effort in advancing the work I’ve been doing on my novel as of recent, and I thought I’d share a little bit about how I develop initial characters with you! (Partially because I’ve not got a huge amount of actual news to share, but also because it might be interesting to some of you!)
First, I identify the need for an agent in the story. Usually, I have a general event that takes place that affects the setting overall in some way. The best way of making a reader care about these events is to have them influence characters; That way, readers have someone to identify with and relate to, as it’s quite difficult to make someone care about (say) a mountain. You need an emotional core, a human face.
Ah, a day for nostalgia and reminiscing. Today is the day, my friends, that the very first domain I ever bought passes from my hands and back into the pool of available names.
I originally registered the site for a young enterprise project in high school, some eight years ago now (blimey, it’s been that long? I feel old now!). One of the best things I ever did, that project. We ran an entertainment company in school, organising concerts starring our fellow schoolmates performing at a damn fine standard (at one point, our school had a very high percentage of any one school represented in the RSAMD juniors programme). It was great, doing that; Although we were all musicians ourselves, there was just something enthralling about enabling the enjoyment of others. I loved the thrill of the setup, the anticipation of the audience to come, the stress and strain of the long hours and the just rewards reaped as a result. We started with nothing but goodwill; We exited with several hundred pounds profit each. Helped me buy my first gaming PC, it did!
Hola y’all! I have good news vis รก vis my ability to deliver the comic!
I went to view a few flats nearer to work. What that did for me was provide me with an increased appreciation for the quality of the flat I’m currently living in, and the realisation that perhaps the price I’m currently paying for it is actually quite fair, compared to market. So, pending the signing of the lease renewal tomorrow afternoon, I won’t have to move after all. Groovy!
Anyway, in other news, I’ve started writing the script to the next arc of Elf Blood. Anyone got anything they want to ask about it? I’ll be happy to fill you in ๐
Well, it’s been a lovely couple of weeks back up in Glasgow, but sadly all good things must come to an end, eh?
I know I’ve definitely mentioned it before, but for some reason this year I’ve been missing Glasgow a whole lot more than usual. I love the place; Sure, it may be a little wetter than the rest of the world, occasionally a little colder, but the friendliness of the people just warms you right up. It’s such a pretty city; Anywhere you go, look up and you can see such elegant and beautiful architecture, and the streets are so open and airy. On Buchanan Street, if you take out your earphones and just listen to the people as they go past, you’ll hear the murmur of a thousand different conversations, never vying for volume or harsh in tone. Head down towards George Square, down to the Merchant City, and you can understand why such an ancient city is still suited for modern life; Trendy bars, fantastic restaurants, classy shopping contribute to Glasgow’s recent Bohemian atmosphere. Hop on the underground and head over to the West End, where we show how important science and culture are to us Glaswegians. The Botanic Gardens are a delight to behold in any season and any weather, and when the rain gets too much for you take a trip to Kelvingrove. The Kelvingrove was one of the most important places I was ever taken to as a child, and one of my favourite places to go still. It preserves art and natural history for us, and actively pushes to make learning engaging and interesting for all.
Ahh, back to work in a few days. Just as well I really enjoy my dayjob! One day I’ll be writing for a living, though, and I can do programming and other techie stuff as a hobby. It ain’t a dream, people; It’s a goal ๐
I do enjoy holidays, especially when you’ve prepared stuff in advance so that you can actually afford to relax. I’ve had a great time, and I feel totally refreshed and ready for work again! So let’s get this year off to an awesome start! Rock on, peeps!
Ooh, SKO gets a haircut. It was originally going to be a lot shorter, but dangit I just like girls with long hair…
Anyways, New Years’ Eve tonight! Wishing you guys all the best for the new year, and hoping you get to party with your friends and/or loved ones well into the morning! Just don’t get too drunk ๐ I doubt I will be, all I know is that I’ll be watching Jools Holland and sipping on champagne ๐
Ah, tradition. Cheers!
M.
It’s almost the New Year guys! What are you looking forward to most about it?
For me, it’s a number of things. I’ll get back to work on Lemon Candies, I’ll be working towards submitting my first comic scripts to publishers, I’ll be attending my first conventions as a vendor and not an attendee… And my resolution this year is to shake off the cloak of singlehood that’s been clinging on to me for oh, so many years!
What are you guys looking forward to or committing to?
