Creative realisations

Hola amigos y amigas! (note: I offer no guarantees as to the accuracy of my Spanish)

As part of super-secret-project-x (which you might be figuring out by about now), I’ve been giving some thought as to what it is that I enjoy doing, both as a job and outside of work.

The key thing about my personality is that I am first and foremost a creative person. But what, exactly, does that mean? Well, so far as I figure it it means that I’m happiest when I’m directly producing something myself. That may be a picture, a painting, a document, a piece of code; as long as I am responsible for the making of said thing, I am very happy indeed. read more

Creativity vs. Creativity

I read an article recently. An article that amused me, dismayed me, and in general, made me think.

This article, to be precise. “TED Talks are lying to you.” In this article, the author lays into the modern creative industries, and bemoans the rise of the creative professional, the usage of stock creative heroes/aesops, and the idea that creators are being lead to falsely believe that they will be able to make a living through their creations.

Now, I will admit that the author writes proficiently. However, I have a major, MAJOR, problem with the conclusions that he draws. His contention is that creativity experts are, themselves, devoid of creativity and actively damaging to the notion of creativity in and of itself. read more

Y’know what? I do feel better.

I’ve had the server up for just under a week, now, and y’know what? I’m glad I moved hosts. It’s faster, it gives me more for my money, it gives me more control over the site, and it no longer goes down for an hour every day.

It’s not just beneficial for you guys reading the comic; It’s a massive burden off my shoulders as well. Because I no longer worry about the actual functions of the site, I can focus my efforts on writing the next storyline, on drawing the next page, on finishing the other work I’ve got going on. It’s amazing how much more positive I feel about creating and creativity; to be honest, before I pushed myself to migrate the site I was having a serious think about what I was doing with my life. Was it really worth chasing a creative dream when I could invest that time in, say, climbing the career ladder, finding a partner, raising a family? read more

Rekindling the creative spark

I’ve got a creative fire in my belly this week. Not entirely sure why, but I reckon it’s to do with the excitement of working on the new story arc! I’ve been inspired to crack on with it, I’ve been driven to write more of my script for submission, I’ve had the impetus to write more of my novel, and I’ve even had the chance to draw a bit more of Memecasters Book 2. I still wish I had more time to write and to draw, but right now, with the day getting longer and the post-Christmas malaise finally dying down, I’m finding it easier to get into my creative work again. I’ve not yet recaptured the energy I had, say, two years ago, but that’s probably down to me still not getting enough quality sleep and messing up my weekends. Still, it’s getting easier, and I’ve got a lot of my passion back, so it’s all good eh? read more

A Nascent Idea

It’s a commonly known fact that ideas in themselves are useless; all that matters is the execution. And of course, there is a certain grain of truth in this. For if an idea remains an idea, it resides solely within the mind of the creator, and potentially anyone he communicates this idea to, never getting the opportunity to unleash itself upon the world in its full glory, never to impact upon it or be fully enjoyed by others.

Executing the idea is where the value gets added. Characters are fleshed out, rules and mechanics are established, settings are grown and nurtured from nascent seedlings of creative energy. This is where the creator’s SKILL is involved, as opposed to the natural talent that formed the concept. Skill is the part of the process where we creators can be proudest of our travails, for it is our hard work, dedication and time that sculpts the idea from formation to finish. Skill is where we show how committed we are to the art, where we show how much we have practiced, observed and achieved. read more

A Consultation

Morning all!

Unfortunately it’s been a bit of a wet weekend, and as such we didn’t get to see Batman: The Dark Knight Rises since nobody was all that keen on swimming to the cinema. So America and anyone else who gets films after the UK: I think we can call this one a draw 😛

Anyway, I wanted to see if you guys had any insight, as readers and some of you as fellow creators: I have an idea for a short comic, which I believe has the capability to become quite popular (It’s a cute little four-page funny, about a kid who is a 10-year old tortured artist, his doomed escapades and how he gets through it with tea and kisses from his beloved muse). read more

Ye Olde Internete Shoppe

Hullo all!

I’m sure you’ll all be glad to hear that I’ve finished the first draft to the next Elf Blood story arc, Dreamland and am now in the process of editing it! I thoroughly enjoyed writing it, and it’s gonna be great fun to illustrate, so I’m really looking forward to making a start on it 🙂

In the meantime, Miscalculation thunders on, and things are beginning to heat up! The more astute among you may have noticed that there are actually two stories in this arc, hence it being longer than the others: My aim for future arcs is to stick to around 50-odd pages, to ensure that the story is paced properly. read more

I was going to do an in-depth artistic analysis on a recent website that came to my attention, but as flat inspection is coming up and I’ve been attempting to clean up this dump and illustrate all day, I’ve not been able to prepare one. So here, have a few of my impending ideas for new creative work instead:

Carnivále!

Morning/Afternoon/Evening all!

What a fantastic day yesterday was! The Manchester Day Parade went off without a hitch, with fantastic weather and a plethora of inspired floats moving along the route. It was so great to see not just so many fun designs, and talented and committed community groups participitating, but also the excellent turnout from members of the public. There’s really no better feeling than wheeling a float along the city streets with thousands of people cheering you on from all sides, young and old alike! The artists who worked on the creations really did themselves a huge credit; All the centrepieces were fascinating, bright and really involving, and the performers along the route did a great job engaging with the crowd. Full props to the School of Samba. The man known to us only as the Dance Commander clearly loves what he does, and has a bitchin’ awesome uniform to boot! 😛 read more

The Creative Process

I’m working on the scene-by-scene plan for the next Elf Blood story arc, in preparation for writing it in advance so that I can edit it to bring you a more coherent storyline. This is pretty much how I write all my long scripts; On paper, I’ll work things out as a general plot, then onto a scene-by-scene basis, then all the way down to a page-by-page level. Only once I’m done with that and am sure that the flow is correct, will I progress on to the next stage which is to write the script itself on computer. read more
