A Little Experiment

Hullo pals! My word, it’s a SCHEDULED Extra page! Who knew we would see one so soon?

You might have noted, today’s page is in a bit of a different style – I’m trying out a different way of colouring the pages, and wouldn’t mind a bit of feedback on how they look! This particular page is coloured so that the foreground objects are much more saturated and lighter than the background ones. I’m also going to try out a couple of other options, mostly tweaking the saturation and lightness levels on foreground vs background. read more

Beauty In Simplicity

Hullo everyone! Hope everyone’s ready to start the week right! Because I sure as hell ain’t, so somebody’s gotta pick up the slack somewhere 😛

Couple of things you might notice: Firstly, I’ve installed a little Twitter widget on the left there, so if you’re not on Twitter you can still keep up with my twittery escapades. It’s worth following me, as I tweet almost every day, and I’m uploading warmups to Twitter that you might not see here (at least, not until I need an emergency Extra page, anyway!). Plus, little snippets of what I’m working on, and my general thoughts on the state of the world (Hint: Hell In A Handbasket). I’d love to hear from you all on Twitter as well! read more

Blip!

Hello everyone, I do apologise for the lack of comic for today – I basically had a choice of rushing a terrible page for today, or holding it over ’til Monday and doing a good job. So please enjoy these ink pieces that I’m practicing with – I have a plan to do a series of drawings and washes depicting modern takes on figures from classical Greek mythology and history.

It’s been a very tough week – work’s been absolutely hectic, filled with multiple deadlines and many nights staying late in the office. Hell, I even worked twelve hours yesterday, not something I do often. Any other week I’d consider this enough reason to be jaded by the end of the week, but this week had two extra kicks in the calendar: least of my worries, I interviewed for a new job (within the same company); and right at the front of my mind at all times this week, my Mum went in for heart surgery. read more

Drawing Glasgow

I’m on holiday, hooray! Please enjoy this piece of art that I produced a few weeks ago. I’m hoping to turn it into a project and approach some of the local gallery-cafés to see if they would mount it as an exhibition. In this series, I approach people in and around Glasgow, sit and draw them for five minutes, talk to them for five minutes, and use that information to complete the illustration later on. This is actually my friend and colleague David – That particular day he was having a bit of a hectic time, as the business was relying on him and him alone to fix a vital piece of financial software. read more

Sense of Satisfaction

Blimey, it’s been a bit of a busy weekend, with house stuff to organise and relatives to see. But, fortunately, I’ve been able to keep up with my artwork and writing due to some good focus and time management.

Not only am I impressed with myself for getting it together this weekend, it also gives me a massive sense of satisfaction – things at work are a wee bit stressful just now, and sometimes bleeds over into creative time. But being able to complete my art projects while handling that really encourages me, because it shows I AM capable of handling the artwork workload. read more

Just Some Cartoons

Ahoy hoy everybody,

I just want to start off today’s post with a few words about the Charlie Hebdo killings – No matter what your opinion on the stuff they were publishing, choosing murder as a response is brutish. In fact, words really can’t do justice to the senselessness of the massacre. They may have been offensive, but surely that didn’t merit their executions?

And, potentially at the risk of annoying some folks but I honestly believe this about any religion – Muhammad (pbuh) is a big boy. He doesn’t need people to defend or avenge him. And I certainly don’t think he would have advocated wholesale slaughter just because people were offensive about him. My uncle has a saying – you can’t be a buddha unless you can laugh at yourself. I’m inclined to agree, and surely the same applies to prophets and saints everywhere. read more

And finally: Alasdair Gray!

Hullo everybody! Hope you’re all had a fantastic time over Christmas, and that you’re all looking forward to an even better new year!

Now, I’ve been talking about this artist, Alasdair Gray, for about a week now without having the time to get around to talking about him – I’ve been in contact with his work for almost all of my life. It’s ubiquitous throughout Glasgow, and if you live here it becomes a real part of your cultural makeup.

I’m used to the more grotesque aspects of his style, where reality is portrayed as a flawed, ugly thing that nonetheless is deserving of being captured and rendered as art. But this exhibition gave me the chance to see many different sides to Mr. Gray, and to appreciate the full breadth of his talent. read more

Homework Time!

Hola, everyone!

Yes, I am in a chirpier mood this week, thank you for asking 😛 Unfortunately, yet again I’ve allowed time to get the better of me, and it’s now half-past two in the morning, which is a shame as I really want to talk about something I went along to this weekend.

In the meantime, I’m going to set you some homework, so I can discuss the topic more on Friday: Do try and read up on fantastic Glasgwegian phenomenon Alasdair Gray.

All art, all the time!

So, this week I started an evening class at the Glasgow School of Art, a fine institution and a major part of Glasgow’s education scene. I decided to enrol in an acrylic painting class to really get to grips with some painting basics, and help me develop not just as a painter but as an artist in general.

It looks like it’s going to be a pretty awesome course! A professional artist coaches us, and we’re allowed to paint pretty much anything we want – he comes around periodically and gives us advice. I’ve already picked up a couple of tips that I’m going to practice this weekend, which I’m looking forward to. read more

Recap time!

And thus ends The Child story arc!

Hopefully you enjoyed it – it was a little more action-oriented than my usual fare, which was quite entertaining to draw. Most importantly though, I feel that I’ve improved my artwork throughout this arc. I actually took the time to learn a little bit about color-coordination, and while it’s still not perfect, I’ve definitely got a better look going now. I’ll still probably tweak it for the next arc, but still, the more you know! My lineart I feel has also improved, even if just a little bit! read more
