Y’all Ready For This?

Whew! It’s been a long arc, hasn’t it? But there’s no rest for the wicked, and the new Dreamland Arc starts next Friday! In addition, I’m almost ready to launch something completely different, but you’re going to have to wait until Monday’s update to see what it is!

People frequently tell me I’m too busy, and perhaps they’re right. But to me, I have to work hard on these projects. If I didn’t, all I would be doing is thinking about doing them anyway, so I feel it’s better to use my time in this manner and put up with a bit of stress than to sit around being generally miserable and feeling sorry for myself. Sure, maybe I’m giving up a bit of social life, but I’ve got my friends, and we get to go places and hang out. Could definitely do with a little boost in the romance department, though, although to be honest even if I had the time I’m pretty terrible at even asking ladies out. Yes, I am nerd classic. read more

A Nascent Idea

It’s a commonly known fact that ideas in themselves are useless; all that matters is the execution. And of course, there is a certain grain of truth in this. For if an idea remains an idea, it resides solely within the mind of the creator, and potentially anyone he communicates this idea to, never getting the opportunity to unleash itself upon the world in its full glory, never to impact upon it or be fully enjoyed by others.

Executing the idea is where the value gets added. Characters are fleshed out, rules and mechanics are established, settings are grown and nurtured from nascent seedlings of creative energy. This is where the creator’s SKILL is involved, as opposed to the natural talent that formed the concept. Skill is the part of the process where we creators can be proudest of our travails, for it is our hard work, dedication and time that sculpts the idea from formation to finish. Skill is where we show how committed we are to the art, where we show how much we have practiced, observed and achieved. read more

Fun With Art

Woo! Another weekend, and this time round a bunch of us Manchester-based comic folk are getting together. Art is so much mroe fun when done in groups: While generally I tend to work on my own, this is generally more because I can’t find somebody with enough free time to commit to the project. When you do find that ace collaborater though, you can feel the synergy working, piecing everything together to build something truly great.

One of my favourite collaborators, interestingly enough, is a gent I have yet to meet in person. His name is Rich Fuscia, a professional illustrator and artist from the US. I first worked with him on a submission to Mark Millar’s CLiNT magazine, ‘Emmeline The Butcher’s Daughter’, after I posted up a synopsis of the story and Rich offered to team up with me on it. The end results were fantastic: He captured perfectly the mid-20th century gothic look I had carried around in my head while I wrote the script. His attention to detail is beyond compare, and his characterisation is superb. read more

Freshly Baked Oaf

We all love oafish, slightly dumb though usually well-meaning characters: Homer Simpson, Peter griffin (with less emphasis on the well-meaning), and today’s case study, Johnny Bravo. These loveable losers capture our hearts in ways that very few other character types ever can, despite their many MANY flaws. Why is this?

Now, I’m hardly an academic, but bear with me on this layman’s analysis. Taking Johnny Bravo as our example, let’s examine him on face value: Johnny is a vacuous, womanising, jock-like bully who by all rights should be the enemy of every nerd in existence. He alienates many people he meets, through sheer force of his obnoxious demeanour, let alone the horrendous way he treats both women and those closest to him. There should be absolutely nothing to like about this loutish figure, other than as a cautionary tale as to how not to behave in civilised society. read more

Youth, eternally.

Since this is the internet, and I have a generally good grasp of Elf Blood’s general audience, I’m sure that many of you are familiar with the nominally-childrens’ cartoon Adventure Time. Note the use of the word ‘nominally’ there, as Adventure Time has proven extremely popular with a wide range of ages, from high school students to grown, mature professionals.

Why is a weird show like Adventure Time so popular? I’ll tell you why: It unleashes the child within us again, by forging a world both fantastical and familiar to anyone who has spent time in an imaginary world in their early years; A group that, I hope, should include EVERYONE. In this world, anything can happen, and everything works out for the best with an action-packed scrap or two along the way with a cast of bizarre and endearing characters. Is this not what we used to do when we were younger and more fun? It’s such an appealing thing to us, as students and working adults, to be reminded of a time when we didn’t have so much to worry about. When nobody depended on us, and all we had to do was spend a few hours a day learning and the rest playing or sleeping or eating. read more

Art! (Hungh! Ugh!) What is it good for?

Now, as you all may have noticed, I do consider myself to be a creative person; Whether it’s entertaining you guys with Elf Blood, trying to write longer form drama in the shape of graphic novels, or even just mucking around with a bass, I do enjoy just making stuff up. Primarily, the stuff I make up tends towards being a story of some kind or another, since a) I like stories and b) I find that, for me anyway, it’s the best way to explore ideas and concepts.

However, there are those who deride the creative types, those who do not deem them useful to society and would rather they go do something more useful. I’m sure we all know these types. People for whom anything that’s not a science or profession is immediately worthless. In my engineering dayjob, fortunately I don’t come across many of these types. After all, most people watch TV, or listen to the radio, ergo deriving pleasure from art. I have come across one or two of the worse examples, those who are ACTIVELY rude and go out of their way to make lives miserable for those in more creative jobs than theirs. read more

Hip-hip…

Hooray! [Spoiler in case of people somehow reading news posts before the comic] Fliss is back! How I’ve missed you, my little foxy friend. Wait… Mara has to trade her life in order to rescue Fliss? Oh dear, do I really have to choose between my two favourite characters? I simply can’t… But fortunately I have this handy dandy poll software installed…

As you can tell, a) I’m in significantly better spirits than I was on Monday (apologies if I brought anyone down with my down-ness), and b) I’m on a bit of a Batman kick at the moment. Maybe it’s the prospect of Dark Knight Rises coming soon (Yes, I will be DOUBLE CHECKING THE RELEASE DATE next time we go to the cinema), or maybe it’s just that time of year. Either way, I’m playing Arkham City, finally, which is by and far one of the most entertaining video games I’ve ever played. Props to their rendition of the Penguin, who is probably my favourite villain in the game by virtue of how HORRIBLE he is written to be. THAT’S how you write a true Batman villain! Plus, I’m having hours and hours of hilarity stalking the inmates of Arkham City and listening to Bender shouting curses at Batman. read more
