December is here, and thus marks the threshold for me being officially Christmassy!

Now, I’m a grumpy git about it on the run-up: I have strong issues about putting up lights, decorations, shop displays yadda yadda before December. However, as soon as December hits I might as well walk around with a big ol’ Santa hat on! ‘Tis the season and all that, but more important to me is the feeling of love and friendship I get around this time of year (yes, this is going to be one of those posts so barf bags are provided under your seats).

It’s so easy to see the badness in Christmas, to see the rise of mindless consumerism and slavery to the dollar. And that’s a lot of my problem with it on the run-up, that it’s become this massive commercial exercise that’s geared towards raking in as much money as possible. I certainly can’t say I condemn the big corps for doing so, I just don’t like it all that much.

To me, what really defines Christmas is getting to go back home, see my family, my friends. It’s about playing silly Christmas themed video games and listening to even sillier Paul McCartney songs. It’s about baking, and sharing, and doing things together that you wouldn’t normally get to do through the course of the year. The feeling I get from getting involved in all this is better than any present I could get. And I love it!

So don’t let the winter blues, the spending and the in-your-face advertising get you down! Go and do something fun, something different, something you can share with your loved ones. Or if you’re on your own, take the time to do something special for yourself. Start a little project, something you can build and finish with pride. For Christmas, as they say, comes but once a year. Let’s make the most of it 🙂

Falalalala, lala la laaaaa
