Happy Burns Night!
Fair fa a’ yer sonsie faces! Saturday was Burns Night, which meant all over the world, people joined together in song and supper, with haggis and poetry aplenty!
Burns night is one of those cultural events that, on the face of it, might seem to be a touch stereotypical, and is very easy to bury under swathes of tartan and heather. But to Scots, it’s so much more than tradition – It’s about celebrating national pride, of revelling in the things that make us Scottish, and getting together with pals old and new for an old-fashioned good time. Haggis, neeps and tatties, whiskey, and the poetry and songs of one of Scotland’s greatest sons. Hell, if you can manage to squeeze a ceilidh in there, you’re all set!
So, raise a glass to Scotland this week! For wha’s like us?
Damn few, and they’re a’ deid!

Hey, the only webcomic I read that ackwoledged the awesomeness that is Burns Night. Some countries have holidays for saints or based on old pagan traditions. The Scots have a holiday celebrating the life of a guy who loved women, booze, partying, and writing poetry, in approximately that order. Which is generally celebrated with booze, music, food, dancing, and booze on food.
The best part is, you don’t have to be Scottish to get in on the fun, you just have to think like one. And I don’t care what anybody says, properly-prepared haggis is really tasty, especially with some scotch poured on top.
I think some of the best nights out I’ve had have been at ceilidhs. When there’s a party to be had, Scots will party. HARD. I remember in the youth orchestra, we were travelling across to Denmark as part of a tour – We may have taken over a deck on the boat for a ceilidh. We were invited to a reception in the British Embassy in Berlin… We may have also taken that over and turned it into a ceilidh, as well. Good times!
And as to the ‘think like a Scot’ thing, absolutely! That’s one thing I particularly love about Scotland. While I won’t say there’s no racism (having been told repeatedly by one ex-girlfriend’s grandmother that I “Wasn’t from round here”, which was more confusing than anything), I definitely feel that we tend to accept people on their personalities and their actions rather than their race. One of my friends is half-Malaysian, half-Ghanian by ethnicity, but nobody would consider herself anything but INCREDIBLY Scottish.
Of course, there is that whole Sectarianism thing, which has gotten better in recent years, but still sort of hangs around… We’ll get there eventually!
I really want more haggis, now… But as it’s Chinese New Year, I’ll be celebrating the other half of my cultural heritage 😛
Just don’t feed me haggis wonton. I will NOT thank you for that. Blech.
I completely forgot about Elf Blood!
Dude you need to set up an archive because I need to find where I left off so I can catch up. I loved this webcomic so much!
(tbh I didn’t think it was still around)
I just found the archive heheh… 0_0′
Welcome back 😀 Hopefully you’ll enjoy everything that’s happened since the last time you read the comic! What was going on in the story when you stopped reading, last?
Glad you found the archives! I was all ready to do my guided-tour thing, as well 😛 Enjoy!
