Just putting the comic up today, not much of a spiel. Things aren’t going brilliantly for me at the moment, but I’m determined not to let it dampen my art output. As I’m sure everybody understands, we all get cravings, once in a while; For food, for places, for films and whatnot. We just get this sudden urge to CONSUME something, and we feel restless until we can fulfil that need.
Well, I’ve had a craving recently for some good-old fantasy gaming. Something where I can unashamedly go and save the world, with none of the moral ambiguity and darkness of character of modern gaming. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, not by any stretch at all! It’s just nice to be able to play the hero every once in a while.
As much as I frequently feel that I have little-to-no time to do much of anything these days, I still somehow find time to play computer games. Even if it’s just an hour snatched while having dinner, or late on Friday night, I do enjoy playing games. It’s nice to do something that’s not dayjob work or creative work for a little while, and keeps my brain fresh for the next bout of work!
One thing that I’ve been noticing recently on Steam is the proliferation of ‘Early Access’ games. For the uninitiated, this allows developers to put up for sale a version of a game that is not yet complete, with the promise of a finished product and the chance for players to get the game ahead of time and contribute feedback.

Well, I’m pleased to report that Roddy Hart and the Lonesome Fire’s appearance on the Late Late Show was a resounding success, and the lads’ve been booked on for a week’s residency as a result! We’re all incredibly proud of them!
Anyway, returning to the world of Elf Blood, I hope that you’re enjoying the story so far! I must say, it’s a nice change to do a story that’s almost wall-to-wall action, interspersed with the (relatively) quiet scenes of TKO and the birth of her child. I’ve been going over the plot outline of the next Elf Blood story – Originally, I had planned a dungeon-crawler style romp, but it struck me that having another action-oriented story immediately after this one (well, not immediately after, as you get an issue of Mei Wu in between them!) would be be a little fatiguing. While action is all well and good, I don’t think you get the same value as a reader than with a more involved storyline, and doesn’t let you care about the characters as much. There’s also the texture of the meta-plotting to consider – It’s nice to change up the flow, by following intense action with quieter drama, so as to let the audience ‘rest and recover’, as it were.

Just reminding you that, if you’re in the US or otherwise have access to the channel, tune into Craig Ferguson’s Late, Late Show on CBS tonight for an extra-special treat! Glaswegian rockers Roddy Hart and the Lonesome Fire will be playing, and they’re well-worth checking out! They’ve been going from strength to strength, and this could be their big break in the US market! So keep an eye out, folks! These chaps’ll go far!
In other (significantly more trivial) news, I opted to purchase a Lego Sydney Opera House for myself on Friday, as is traditional on Valentine’s day. It’s now been taken over by The Joker, as Stormtroopers defend against Batman and Wolverine, while Deadpool tries to convince a couple of Rebel Troopers that giving Magneto a wedgie would be a good idea.
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! Best wishes to everyone who’s found true love, and that you have a lovely time. And to all of those who have yet to find true love, come join me at the bar and we’ll drink ourselves into a nice unfeeling oblivion. Hurray for cocktails!
I must say, as I get older, I feel that I harbour less and less resentment towards Valentine’s day. Yes, it still stings that I’ve never spent a Valentine’s day with anyone, yes I feel the encroaching fear of winding up abandoned and alone forever, but I definitely don’t feel as genuinely bitter about it as I used to. Now, instead of wishing I had what I don’t have, I’m merely glad that so many people DO have that something. Maybe I’m finally growing up?
Aloha folks! Another swift update today, as I’ve been quite busy for much of the weekend cleaning the flat in time for inspection. Yes, the flat was that horrendously untidy. Yes, regular inspections are horrendously draconian. Yes, I’m looking forward to owning my own house… In, like, four years’ time. And even then, the deposit I’ll have saved up will probably be peanuts compared to what house-prices will probably be by that point.
On the plus side, my good pal Bob and I have been playing this ol’ blast from the past!
As you all know, I’m an advocate of looking after your mental health, especially when it comes to managing one’s own self-esteem, and levels of stress. These things are generally okay if you’ve learned your life lessons already, or if you’ve got enough confidence and positive experience to draw upon to get you through.
Not everybody’s been able to get to the stage of getting help, though, whether that help is formal or informal. A very important first step in healing yourself is not just admitting to yourself that you need a little bit of assistance, but also reaching out to somebody for support. When you’re deep in the clutches of anxiety/depression, though, it becomes so very easy to avoid talking about your issues: you feel unworthy, you feel your issues are unimportant, you feel that to raise your issues with someone else is to waste their time.
Whew! Well, that was a bit of a close call, RIGHT there!
See, the problem I have with my computer (my ONLY computer, excluding the netbook) is that the main case fan makes this kind of rattling noise when it’s cold. To combat this rattling, I usually performed percussive maintenance on the case until it span itself into a more stable rotation. (I hit the damn thing, if the phrase is not familiar to you).
Unfortunately, this seemed to cause a small PLAGUE of driver errors in the last couple of days. And thus, my Saturday morning/early afternoon was spent mostly trying to fix the mess I’d made. It seems to have settled down, now – I’ve been running my machine for several hours at a time without incident, although I must confess a certain reluctance to attempt playing any graphically-intensive games in case I somehow bugger it up again.
Fair fa a’ yer sonsie faces! Saturday was Burns Night, which meant all over the world, people joined together in song and supper, with haggis and poetry aplenty!
Burns night is one of those cultural events that, on the face of it, might seem to be a touch stereotypical, and is very easy to bury under swathes of tartan and heather. But to Scots, it’s so much more than tradition – It’s about celebrating national pride, of revelling in the things that make us Scottish, and getting together with pals old and new for an old-fashioned good time. Haggis, neeps and tatties, whiskey, and the poetry and songs of one of Scotland’s greatest sons. Hell, if you can manage to squeeze a ceilidh in there, you’re all set!
